Which credit card is the best for someone to get started establishing credit.?
Without to many hidden fees.

None of them.

You do not need a credit card for ANY reason. Not even for a home loan. Home loans can be underwritten. See a good mortgage broker and they can do it without a credit rating.

If your heart is set on obtaining one, become a member of a local credit union. They tend to have the best, basic forms of credit cards. If you go this route, DO NOT set your credit limit above $500. Why? Temptation, procrastination, etc. Things happen.

I recommend using CASH. Debit Cards too. There is virtually NOTHING that you can buy without a DEBIT CARD. The protections that consumers have with CREDIT CARDS also applies to DEBIT CARDS. It's Federal law.

I have 2 credit cards. I don't use them. I am letting one expire on purpose... lack of use.

I will keep one because I travel extensively, and since I wear out my debit card quite regularly, I do need one.

I am debt-free, except for my house and my wife's car. It's a great way to live and be wealthy.

Go to your Bank credit cards are too high on intrest rates. Plus it is too hard not to just swipe the card at the checkout. CASH and bank loans if you must have a bank loan.
Try saving the money then buy what you want instead of oweing someone

Get it through your bank. Visa or Mastercard are good starters. Stay away from American Express as they aren't very convenient to have unless you're rolling in $$.

Credit cards are not the way to start credit, they show an open end balance of unused funds and your credit scores will reflect just like if you have all the moneys available borrowed , start a small loan for 2-3 yrs at a bank and pay on time every time, if you must get credit rating from a credit card, then have your parents add your name and information to their card as they make payments and use credit wisely your credit rating builds some too and you have no risk of overextending your parents card

The easiest way to start building credit is to get a department store credit card (kohls, sears, etc.)

Start slow and make sure you protect your credit. Bad decisions you make now will affect the rest of your life.

Credit Guru
This is one of the most common questions on this board.

How do I build/establish credit?

First off you need to be educated about how credit works in the U.S. Every credit decision a lender makes is driven by FICO credit scores. You can go to www.myfico.com and look in the Credit Education section to learn how FICO credit scores are determined. To build your credit you have to place positive credit items on your file that will report positively for 6-12 months minimum. If you want your credit to be in the Excellent category (FICO score 720+) then your goal should be to have 3-6 revolving accounts(dept. store, gas cards, Visa. etc.) and 1-2 installment loans(car, mortgage) that are reporting positively.

I would start out with a Bank of America or Wells Fargo secured Visa card. Both banks have great programs with low annual fees, low starting amounts ($300.00) and no junk transaction fees like some people are promoting on this board. After 12 months of positive on time payments you will graduate to an unsecured status. Then you will probably be approved for other cards such as dept. store and gas cards.

Good Luck

Rocket
Get a bank credit card. If your a student advise them of this. You will get a lower interest rate and also if you are part of that bank some banks have lower rates for their existing customers.

Visa Card.

go threw your bank or credit union they usually give you the best intrest rate. don't get carried away. other then that do some reasearch on low interest credit cards
