Cards with a mileage-earning component give users a way to "double dip" (earn miles both for the flight, the hotel or the car rental, AND for the dollar value of the charged purchase), as well as earn miles for credit card purchases which would not otherwise fall under the mileage umbrella.
While there are many cards which feature miles- or points-for-purchases, the choice facing consumers boils down to cards in the following categories:
1. Airline- and Hotel-Affiliated Credit Cards
2. Charge Cards (e.g. AmEx/Diners)
3. Bank-Issued Credit Cards with a Travel Awards Program
4. Debit Cards
What is the best card for earning miles?
If there were an easy answer to that question, there would not be as many card choices as there are.
The real question is: What is the best card for ME, given MY travel, charging and balance-payment patterns?
American has its Citibank AAdvantage card. For every dollar charged, the cardholder earns one AAdvantage mile. United counters with its Mileage Plus First Card, Northwest with the WorldPerks Visa card, etc. With the exception of Delta (which offers an AmEx Optima as its card), most airline cards are Visa, MasterCard, or a choice thereof. Annual fees for these cards tend to be somewhat higher than for comparable non-mileage cards in the $25 - $125 range. And APR are also higher, typically falling into a fairly narrow 15% - 18% range.
Because VISA and MasterCard are the world's most widely accepted cards, you will be able to use those cards, and hence earn miles, at pretty much any retailer or service which accepts credit cards for payment.
In order to add value to the cards, airlines and their card partners routinely offer special promotions allowing cardholders to earn bonus miles for various transactions.
Because most frequent flyers' primary relationship is with their preferred airline and its associated frequent flyer program, they often think first of signing up for the card linked specifically (and uniquely) with that program.
This is the simplest solution: one card, accepted practically everywhere; one statement; one monthly payment.

I work for a credit card company and I can tell you that Bank of America offers a card called Worldpoints giving you the biggest range of reward options. Everything from merchandise and gift certificates to cash back and travel.

I like citibank dividend card. You get 2% on all Gas, Grocery, Convenience Store, and Utility bills. Everything else is 1%. Be careful though, if they cap you at $350 per year in rebates. I also have citibank shell card which gives you 5% on shell gas and 1% on everything else. I believe there is something out there by chase that's better but I need to do a little research on that.

The best card for you depends on how much you spend in various spending categories since cards pay different rewards percentages (usually between 1% and 6%) in various categories. The easiest way to calculate how much you can expect from various cards for your spending profile is the free calculator at http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/ .

I have a discover platinum gas card that I really like. It is similar to the shell citi card, but you can get gas at any station, not just shells. It gives 5% back on all gas and most lube changes etc. and 1% on everything else. You can get that in cash or if you would rather have gift cards you can increase your rewards by varying amounts (ex. I think if you get a red lobster gift card you get an extra 25%) You can also cash in the rewards in $20 increments
