sjbrayboy | Which is the best way to improve my credit score? |
My current credit score is 594. I have one open account on my report, which is a student loan and I have been on time with the payments for over two years. I have 10 closed accounts on my report. Three of them have balances of $270, $397, and $563 ($1230 total). I wanted to start with the lowest balance first, and pay it in full, then do the same with the other two. Should I pay them in full, one at a time, or make payments each month? Which way is best to raise my score? |

To raise your credit score you will have to pay each account in full. Start with the highest interest accounts first and work your way down. If you want to improve your score even faster go out and get yourself a consolidation loan. Not only will you be able to pay all of the accounts off at once but you will have a "positive" rating from the new loan you have just acquired. You may also want to consider getting a prepaid credit card to help raise your score. Any credit you have that is being reported as credit will help improve your score |

Don't start with the lowest balance first.... instead start with the HIGHEST interest rate first. Then you're being more productive with each payment getting more bang for your buck.
To increase your credit score, it's pretty simple. 1. pay off accounts you have, and 2. don't start any new accounts. (if you need to charge something use an existing account that's still paid off but still open, and pay it off as soon as you can)
The people with the highest credit scores are those that manage their finances like they don't NEED credit (pay everything off and pay cash). |

You are wise to pay off the cards. That is one of the best ways to raise your score. Do not close the accounts, but rather pay them off.
Change course and pay off the highest interest rates first. If you can pay them all off at once, do so. But not to raise your score, but to save the interest!
Your credit score will rise over time. It is a function of payment history, income, and debt/equity. |

If the closed accounts are old, ignore them. Paying them off will not improve your score and they will time off your report after 7 1/2 years. If they are newish, contact the holder and see if you can "pay for delete". If the holder is a collection agency, they cannot delete the original default. Just get a signed agreement stating that your debt is settled if you pay. |

there is no rhyme or reason as to what will work to increase your score. What you are refering to is called the snowball, snowflake or avalanche technique where you can put equal portions to each outstanding gradually, throw lump sums at each one periodically (tax return or holiday) or avalanche where you throw all the money at each one, one by one. Its a great debate in the credit world. Ultimately the closed acct will stay there for 7 years, satified or not. If you allow them to "expire" unsatified they will not disappear, they may come back up when you go to purchase a home or something. They just move to a different report instead of your credit report. I did the right thing and paid mine off regardless. I think you should start with the small ones first that way you can see it clear up and nothing is better than seeing "paid in full" next to one of those delinquencies. It takes time and patience but is worth it. Nothing is better than having a good credit score. It opens the world of possibilites up to you. Since you only have student loans I suggest you get a credit card too to help build your score. You can start small with a store charge just be sure to use it and pay it off so they will raise your balance. |
