Which is the better alternative, credit counseling service or bankruptcy?

I'm just me
There are many credit counseling agencies out there who are scams, so be careful which one you use. I know people who have done both. If you are employed I would suggest repaying your debt, it is better on your record in the long run.

The answer is Neither.
Credit counseling - you get charged to do what you can do for free and you are considered to have filed bankruptcy when you try to get a mortgage . Reality bites.
Bankruptcy - you weasel out of what you owe and you pay higher rates for any credit you get next 7 yrs. Reality is.
Stop the insanity - those who go to either options are in the same boat within 5 yrs (Bank Assoc info).
Stop get a budget cash in = cash out NO credit.
Get 2nd & 3rd jobs Turn off TV work to earn you freedom. Pay your bills Sell anything that is not of blood or marriage. Pay smallest first - it is fun to win. Got next biggest - win that one now continue.
visit DaveRamsey.com to learn what the banks will not tell you unless you like the slavery to debt.

CCTCC
robert w has it. Both are bad, bad, bad.

Credit counselling is usually a scam. Not all credit card companies will accept their terms. (They don't have to.) They are notorious for not paying the bills at all.

Bankruptcy is worse.

Budget your money carefully every month. Take all your bills and write them out lowest to highest. Pay as much as you can on the smallest. If the others get paid less than the minimum, oh, well. Just pay them something. Even $5.

Get you a second job. Sell stuff on eBay. Have a garage sale. Anything you can think of to get more money.

Credit Counseling is the best alternative.

The better of the two is the CCC, but even that goes on your credit report. The best would be if you sat down, figured out who you owed, figured out how much you could pay them each month and then contacted them asking could they halt your credit card use if you started making payments until you caught up. They might agree to that. Some might, some might not. See which do....and then if you're still stuck (after you have removed your cable, your cell phone, reducec your light bill, reduced your gas use, closed down rentals you don't need, and are on a beans and bread diet), then try CCC. Remember that they too want a monthly payment, but once they make you cut up your credit cards those banks won't let you use their credit cards ever again. Such a price to pay when a person (any person) can't manage their money, so it's better to learn and find a way to manage your money. Maybe try for a holiday second job (and don't buy gifts this christmas).

Credit counseling would look better on your credit report than bankruptcy.

CREDIT COUNSELING, BUT you can do that yourself. You can call them and negotiate as well. You don't need to pay a company to do that for you.

it depends on what your debts are. thanks to george bush, people have to qualify for bankruptcy now.

My partner and I are facing a similar question, and the new bankruptcy laws include debt counseling in the process now, so the point is moot. It is better to seek legal debt counseling that can intervene with all debt, not just credit card debts. Some people are not in debt to plastic, but to hospitals, home loans etc. Do double check any company you decide to work with very carefully. You don't want to be scammed and end up in worse shape. I would sugesst looking in your local area, and see if there are any agencies, state or government run, that can help you, before you step off the ledge into cyber space. Look for Better Busness Bureau reports, Consumer watch web sites, and Scam alert sites before you give your money or information to any one of them. Good luck
