Who in the HE** came up with the idea of credit checks to rent an apartment or house?
I feel that is a bunch of bull!! I am having a hard time trying to find an apartment or house for my family because I had a car repossesed. Now, thats crazy!! The reason I couldn't pay my car note was because I chose to pay my rent instead. I feel people need a roof over their head. If they want to check anything it should be past landlords! not my personal past finances!! Not everyone has this perfect credit score! But everyone do need a place to stay. I think credit checks for rental property is BOGUS!!
Think about it. They ask for deposit and first month's rent and sometimes last month's rent too. When your least is up, I don't care how much you clean up the damn place they always seem to KEEP THE DEPOSIT!!
This is the very reason why there are soooo many homeless people. All because someone (With GOOD CREDIT) decided to have this bright idea!! This is how the rich get richer and the poor stay poor!!! Credit scores or BOGUS!!

I have worked as a property manager for many years. The reason for doing a credit check is to check your financial responsiblity, in other words...are you going to be responsible enough to pay your rent?

There are four things I look for when potential renters show interest in a rental.
1. Their monthly income must be three times the amount of rent minimum. For example, a rental is $700.00 per month. The potential renter's monthly income must be at least $2100.00 per month. This ensures you are able to at least pay your rent, plus other bills such as utilities, etc.

2. No felony convictions.

3. Credit Check. This is used to verify your financial responsibility. What I look for in this is whether there are collections against you such as other rental properties, and/or large amounts of unpaid utility bills.
In your case, if the only thing I saw was a collection against you because of a vehicle, this would not affect you.

4. Rental reference checks. Rental references must come back positive. The questions I ask are how much you paid, how long you stayed, and would they rent to you again.

To protect your deposit and get it back, you must do a walk through with the landlord BEFORE signing the lease. Make note of everything even if it seems nick picking. Note items such as needs paint, oven not cleaned, stain(s) on carpet, nail holes, etc.
When you check out, do the walk through with the landlord again. Normally a certain amount is kept automatically for carpet and blinds cleaning. But this should be noted on your lease agreement before you sign it.

I don't know if any of this helped or not, but not all property managers are slum lords, and we take pride in our work.

I think it's a great idea.

Maybe next time you decide to make your car payment instead of paying the rent.

Listen, you've got no one to blame for your credit score but yourself. It's perfectly reasonable to check your credit given the trouble it is to evict someone for nonpayment.

The landlord doesn't owe you a roof over your head.

Sorry, but I must disagree.

Credit reports are a lot like report cards when we were in school only instead of showing how good/bad we are doing in our studies they show how good/bad we are doing at managing our debt.

Having been married to a lady who was a property manager of a very large apartment complex I know how hard it is to evict deadbeats that do not pay, so why not simply run credit checks and don't rent to them in the first place.

You have no one to blame for your bad credit except the person looking back at you from the mirror. No one owes you a roof over your head or a job.

Well, after years and years and years of landlords renting to people who eventually screwed them over, they decided to start checking credit so that they would be able to eliminate the applicants that were the least likely to be able to pay on time.

um, well if people pay their bills...they would have a good credit report. if you were looking at apartments that were within your budget, most credit scores will be appropriate. I don't blame apartment communities/rental property owners for requiring a credit check. They are business owners...the point is to make money-they see people with bad credit as a high/moderate or low risk. If you are a high risk person, they don't want to just trust that you will pay your rent every month-just as you did when you didn't pay your car payment, which must have been atleast 3 months late for them to repo it. If people would pay their bills, there would be no problem. Live a bit below your means and you should be able to pay your bills. Don't be mad at the people who provide homes to millions of BILL PAYING citizens just because you don't

do u feel better after letting off the steam?.
yes credit scores for renting is b.s. however look at it from an 'owners' viewpoint.
do u want to loan /rent ur property out to some one who doesn't value others property? CreditScores are brainless ways of excluding some people in favor of others. life isn't fair.
may i suggest a visit to daveramsey.com to learn ur hard lessonfrom others mistakes.
u'll find a different thougth process to get around ur stituation.
sorry what we've found is the poor stay poor because they chose to do what poor folks do. their 'friends' drag them done. they insist on not reading about successful people and acting on the facts.
of every 100 millionaires created , 88 of them came from little or no money.
just perservence and action.
poor is a choice not a caste.

Man, do you want some cheese with your whine?

The only way businesses stay in business is by not doing business with people that do not pay their bills. If this description fits you, sorry but it's no ones fault but yours

"Who in the HE** came up with the idea of credit checks to rent an apartment or house?"

I suspect it was landlords that were tired of renting to people who turned out to be deadbeats. My apologies if that describes you.

And it isn't about rich versus poor. It's about people who are honest and pay their bills versus those that don't; that isn't at all the same thing.

There are some places that don't care about credit . You will become wiser from your mistakes and there is no better teacher than experience. If it wasn't from the mistakes that I made years ago I would not be where I am today so don't hate your self for your miscalculations . When I was younger than I am now I made some mistakes and I don't regret any of them because I've learned from them and it has made me in to the strong, wise and determined person that I am today.

I think god for my mistakes because I'm doing well know because of them .
