Lehman Brothers is not a bank, it's is an Investment Banking Firm. They are a conduit organization. Their Bankruptcy was merely a strategic move due to the inability to find someone to bail them out of their cash flow situation. |

Biggest single reason: Sub-Prime lending and inappropriate use of Adjustable Rate Mortgages to the sub-prime.
Lehman had way too much of it's money in these loans, when they went bad, Lehman lost their shirt. |

Oh I get such a giggle from you Dumocrats that love to blame this in Bush.
So tell me....why it is that the Senate Banking Commission...headed by (D)Christopher Dodd, has not been able to get a credit card reform bill through congress? After all, they do have a majority, don't they? And with Senator Levin right there pushing it, they still can get this bill passed? One of the most important consumer related bills related to banking, and it gets nowhere?
Could it be that this bill would have a drastic way banks handle credit card? Could it be that Dodd and a number if Dumocrats are in the back pockets of the banks? Could it be their lack of any meaningful legislation that would force banks to act responsibly?
As I have said in many of my past answers, the collapse of the banks is totally predictable. What else could be the result of the following:
-The government forcing banks to hand out loans to people who can't afford them
-Allowing banks to raise interest rates to a point that several years ago would be considered loansharking
-Allowing banks to change the rules of the loan to allow them to change interest rates for any reason, or apply unreasonable penalties on a whim?
All of these practices make it virtually impossible for people to get out of debt.
No, don't blame Bush for this. The blame is on your side of the political fence.

People or companies defaulting on loans. Mostly Sub-prime loans. Sub Prime loans are loans that have a low interest rate for a brief term. At the end of this term you are expected to make a balloon payment for the interest that was diverted from the initial term. Most people thought they would be able to either sell their home for a profit before the end of the term or that they would be able to afford it by the end of the term. Neither has happened so they just to decide to walk on the loan leaving the bank with properties that are worth less (due to a bad housing market) then what they originally loaned out. |

Loss of security on million of mortgage backed loans.
Basically the lending standards were way too slack and persons who had no business applying for loans were qualifying for them even though they were un/underemployed, already in debt and/or had poor credit scores. So naturally no sooner did the introductory no or low interest rates expire and real mortgage amounts came due and they couldn't pay.
People got all excited and many took out home equity loans for cars, trips, etc.. and once their homes were negative equity (owed more than the home was worth) they were already knee deep in it. Multiply that by millions of would-be homeowners and you get todays big fat financial mess.

These investment banks got greedy and chased after risky debt issued to lousy home borrowers. They are getting what they deserve. They promoted a wild west atmosphere of anything goes in the mortgage lending industry. If they had not created the secondary market where this mortgage based trash could be traded the economy would be in much better shape.
