I believe that our society is at fault for this problem. We've become a give-it-to-me-now society. With the Internet, television, and other technologies we have come to enjoy, we've become a society that can't wait. We can't be inventive or frugal. We have this drive to "keep up with the Jones'" no matter what the sacrifice, and we are not teaching out children to look beyond tomorrow. We need to teach our kids self-discipline.
I've been in trouble with credit, and I blame no one but myself. I need to teach my children how to manage themselves and how to think ahead. If I don't, they will end up in the same place as I was. |

The whole world exists on credit nowadays. It only takes a second to get approved for a card and rack up the bill - but it takes a lifetime to pay it off now! Credit card companies target college students with gimmicks, like free t-shirts, to get them to sign up for high-interest cards. I would claim that the problem is found with these card companies. |

Someone needs to teach us!!! We don't know any better unless we are shown how to do it right. I think all high school students should be required to take some sort of classes on budgeting, or something. |

I'm 26 and from what I see, everyone now believes that they will ALWAYS be in debt to some extent or in some fashion so they figure why not get what I want now. To them, the idea of saving up to buy something is an ancient philosophy. And, they're not worried about the consequences either. They either figure that they're already in deep so it doesn't matter, or, they believe that somehow they will "get out" of having to the pay the debt.
So, I'm not sure what has changed since the 60s and 70s since I was not around then, but apparently something has changed.
From what I have seen, yes, the parents are often in the same shape. A friend of mine once told me that his father told him that you will always be in debt, just expect that you will have to make payments on things for the rest of your life. |

Good parents will teach responsible credit habits: don't buy what you can't afford, pay off the entire balance, etc. Education is how the rich get richer. |

Unfortunately, yes. Credit cards have come a long way since the 60's & 70's. It is more the Credit Card comanies faults that the kids. The kids dont know any better and the CC companies intentionally target the youth to make thier money in interest and collections. Almost as bad as tobacco companies |

I know alot of the people my age with credit cards have them because it's considered a status symbol. They could be breaking their back (or their parent's) to cover the minimum payment on that card behind closed doors but in front of their friends they can go shopping and slide the card and look like they have money and independance. A lot of them don't realize that it's going to be there for a LONG time if something happens and they can't pay on their debts. |

Credit cards give kids the instant gratification, the finance lessons occur later in life when they need to pay them off. |
