Try department stores such as JCPenny, Sears, etc... as they are usually pretty easy to get one with. You can and should also try Capital One and Household Bank as they are very easy to obtain a credit card through too (you can apply online for both). Unfortunately, rates are going to probably be anywhere from 15-25% depending on who you get your card with due to your lack of credit history. As you show a responsibleness with your credit and your credit history and score improve you will get offers for much better rates and deals. Read the following blog for more tips on building and rebuilding credit. |

Of course you can get a credit card if you're responsible enough. Have your parents put your name on their credit card as an authorized user. You're not legally responsible for the account. As long as your parents pay on time and you arrange to pay them back, you can start building your credit that way.
If not, go with big bank like BOA, citibank etc.. they do have partially secured or secured credit cards for students. You also have to pay a higher interest rate. |

You have no credit history. You need to establish a credit history t prove you'll pay your debts. |

because you are new to the credit world you don't have any accounts showing so you are considered a true zero credit score. that's what's keeping you from getting a credit card with a low interest rate |

Everyone's posted their answers and there's been some good ones especially from dzwreck and the big homie Chane, but I'm gonna put my 2 cents in. Do you have a checking account like one of the posters said? Reason being is that a lot of credit unions and a few major banks (Citi, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo) offer secured credit cards. You can think of this as a way to build credit with a savings acccount, because that's pretty much how that works you place a deposit upfront usually tied to a savings account to get the same amount of the deposit as a credit limit. This can be used to your advantage because you can increase the credit line by adding to the deposit which also gains interest while you're building credit. So one would think that would be incentive to open a secured card and start up a rainy day fund and build credit at the same time. Keep in mind that you wouldn't be able to touch the deposit for a year, which you would get back providing you pay on time every month and keep the balance manageable, let's say 30% or lower of your available credit. Once that happens either the card converts to a unsecured card or a better card's offered, and once again you'll get the deposit back with interest. And the higher you can get the limit, the better, becuase the high limit reported on your credit will demonstrate that you're responsible with large limits and will open the door for more offers for credit. Trying department store cards may work, they may not, but at least with a secured card, at least you have your foot in the door with a major credit card. I posted several links to secured credit cards, hopefully one of these will help out.
Good luck! |
