Why credit card is better than a debit card?

Debit cards do not show on credit reports, therefore, they do not provide a history of ones credit worthiness. When you use a debit card the funds are taken from your checking. Some vendors do not process the purchase immediately and this can cause one to get an overdraft fee without knowing it.

Only credit card debt is reported to the CRAs

Credit cards are better because:
* Better consumer protection. It is easier to dispute a purchase (unauthorized, or authorized but covered by some other warranty, see below)
* You are not out of YOUR money if there are unauthorized purchases. With a debit card, the money is taken out of your checking account, and you have to tell the bank before they put money back, and it all takes time, so you can run into overdrafts and bounced checks, which will eventually be fixed but you'll have a headache and wasted time dealing with them.
* Credit cards more often provide protection like secondary travel insurance, collision damage waiver, purchase protection (against accidental damage), extended warranty (on top of manufacturer's), return protection (like 90 days returns or refunds no questions asked)
* Better rewards programs. Credit cards are are more expensive to process than debit cards, so the companies give more back in rewards.
* Branded cards have special programs and rewards for the specific brand
* High end credit cards have concierge

Now that's not to say that debit cards don't have the same protections, but in my experience the coverage is MUCH better on credit cards. There are probably other reasons too, but the above should cover the basics.

Unless you are really bad with money and can't budget or control your spending, I can't think of a reason to ever use a debit card.

There is only one reason that I could think of that would make that statement true....

That reason is...that a debit card deducts funds from your account at the time of use. A credit card credits the card and you keep the cash in your savings or checking account.

So...you keep cash on hand.

If you have a lot of cash on hand then the difference is "interest". Usually using a credit card without paying the balance when do...results in a fee called interest.

I use a credit card myself, and pay the balance at the end of the billing cycle.

Carl is right on the money. The bank does not have to refund funds if you use a debit card. On a credit card, you are only responsible for the first $50.00 which in most cases they will waive.

credit cards are used to build credit, debit cards are better if you have the money on hand but still you need to build credit if you want to buy a house, car and other things, check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com here you will be able to compare all major credit cards side by side on rates, fees and rewards.

A credit card is credit that you pay back over time with interest and a debit card give you access to your checking account or savings account and when all the money is gone your card will not work. A debt card is not credit.

A debit card is not giving you a credit history which is what you need to establish credit and get a FICO score. A credit card shows how you pay your bills and leave you with a credit history. NOw if you don't want to have acredit history keep on using the debit card. A debit card they take your money out right away from your account.....

There may not be enough room to list all the differences. Yes, if you are trying to rebuild your credit, the credit card will do that but a debit card will not. A debit card is simply a device for directly withdrawing money from one of your bank accounts. You pay all the fees for this privilege. A credit card, the fees are paid by the business you purchase items or services from and you pay nothing so long as you have a card that allows you to pay the bill in full at the end of each month to avoid interest charges. Some cards charge interest from the date of the charge till payment is received.

Therefore, a debit card just takes money from your bank account (you pay fees for this) and the credit card constitutes a loan to you by the credit card company (the businesses pay the fees when you use this)

If anyone gets a hold of your Debit card, they can withdraw everything you have in it. With a credit card you are covered for all losses.

I think debit card better, no interest to pay, You are covered for losses on it, It does take your money right away but so what. I am 42 and have never owned a credit card and never will, If i can't pay for it than I don't need it.

Rana
I don't use any
