I've pondered this as well. Time to plant a money tree, AKA stripping. |

you're lucky you didn;t get charged $39 |

They presume you knew you didn't have any money too and therefore should not have written a cheque. $25 will probably make you think again. |

If there was no penalty, there would be no reason for people to just bounce checks freely. Plus you bouncing a check makes more work for the bank, they are a business looking to make money like any other, they aren't a charity business. |

If you don't put the money in withing 6 days, they will charge you that fee again.
Even though they know you don't have the money.
Banks make an average of $240 on people that carry balances less than $300.
Keep at least 1 months salary socked away as a cushion in that account.

~~I'd laugh if it didn't make me so mad...when my account was new, I once paid $40.00 for a $10.00 check...they double deposited the check at $20.00 Over-Draft each time...I now have Over-Draft Protection.~~ |

Yeah, and why do some of them charge for being overdrawn......doesn't that just make you MORE overdrawn?
*sigh* I just don't get it;-)
***Hey all you unhappy people, lighten up. It's all in good fun. No need to be so righteous. |

It's to cover losses of other people's bounced checks. When someone writes an NSF check and they don't cover it, you have to pay for it via the $25 fee for your NSF check. |

Because that's a normal bank policy. They assume you know your balance and should not be writing checks that you can't cover and therefore they charge you for a bad check. It would have been spelled out to you in there policy statement if you had read it. |

Because that bounced check cost the bank money. It is a standard bank policy which all banks uphold. |

It gets added to your debt to the bank and can be sold to collections like any other debt. |

because that is the stated penalty for writing a bad check. if you did not have the money, you should not have written the check, period. |

sorry for your pain, but haha, someone wrote so you learn, but i think its true |

They charge because they can. It costs them money to process a bounced check, it's only fair you pay. In addition, they want to discourage you from bouncing more checks, so if you're upset with the charge, it's working as intended. |

Rules are rules for any banks to impose a levied on bounced cheque. |

Retailers post bounced check fees at the register. So, if you knowingly wrote a check you knew wouldn't clear, then yeah, you're going to check hit with check fees. DUH!
Banks are not there to hold your hand or say "Poor thing, she's already overdrawn, let's not charge her". If you're old enough to write checks, then you are old enough to be responsible for your actions and must deal with the consequences. |
