I think you might be misunderstanding this;
Typically when you start a new job that you get paid hourly every two weeks for example, they give you your paycheck a week after the pay period ends.
For example....you start on the first and the company pay period ends on the 5th, then you get paid a week after that for your first week...that would be two week after starting you get your first week pay....then two weeks later...4 weeks into your employment you get paid for your 2nd and 3rd week and so on...this happens because they need time to process payroll....nothing is being held back from you....you are just always one week behind to allow for processing. |

They won't after you get a lawyer and find out what's going on. Never heard of anyone ever doing that. But whoever said withholding paychecks is illegal was right. |

They hold you back a week basically to establish your payroll. It all evens out once your paychecks start coming regularly. |

that is illegal. you should report this one to the authorities if you happened to know a company doing this. |

The only reason a company would do something like that is because they do not have the money to pay you. Which means you might not see your second paycheck either, and then when they go out of business you won't see any money that you have earned. |

Well the answer of this question has a broad sense. Companies hold your check to get clarification from all the departments that you don't have any due from them and second reason is they do this to make a final effort to stop you for leaving that company if you do not pay notice period. And some time your manager make it possible because he may find potential in you. |

Withholding your paycheck like this is illegal. Not to mention an accounting headache when an employee stays there for a long period of time. If you work in a position that requires you to use company owned equipment, they will may wait to give you your last check when you have returned all the equipment. |
