So that the cashier can compare your signature. If you sign it when you get it, theoretically, the cashier will notice if someone else tries to sign for a purchase on your card. |

It's supposed to protect you. The vendor is supposed to compare the signature on the card to your signature on the receipt, but they NEVER do this. My brother has his 4 year old son sign his as a joke, and no one has ever said anything.
I got my credit card stolen once, and they spent $1000 on it. So now I put "SEE ID" on the back of my card so that they can compare my picture and name to the card.
Only about 10% of people actually ask to see my ID, but I guess it's better than nothing. |

really? they do? i didnt sign my credit card. they dont even have a sample of my signature because i applied online. so i doubt they have a sample of my signature.. hehe. |

I'm sure its a liability type thing, still confusing though. You dont have to sign if you feel uncomfortable with it however, just print "Photo ID required" instead and if the cashier even takes time to notice, they'll require a photo id upon purchases. |

I do not sign mine and they cannot make you. I put see ID on it and if they do not ID the purchaser then it the store your are purchasing froms liability if a bad charge is made |
