Miss Mayhem | Why do credit collectors have to be rude? |
When I answer the phone and they are rude, I just write it off and refuse to pay. It seems if I could have paid on time I would have - however once they are rude, I am basically done.
I know that is bad, but I just don't get it. Additional Details I have very few marks on my credit, however I don't really care about my credit rating. There is no reason to be concerned over it - so I am not worried if it goes down a bit because I didn't pay something right on time. |

I agree with your statement. There are millions of scenarios which preclude people from paying everyday. However, the consensus of collection agencies and their staff is that people are not responsible and are entitled to be treated like human garbage..
I want you to remember that most collection agencies have very lax standards for the people they hire.. Why? Collection agencies have one of the worst turnover rates in any industry.. This is because the business is mostly commission and they have aggressive goals to meet.... Most of the people employed with these places are ones who cannot obtain employment elsewhere because of prior criminal problems which do not allow them to be employed.. Some though are employed because they work well with people and make lots of money.. Don't get me wrong.. Not all collectors are rude and/or ugly..
Some collectors actually do not believe in disrespecting another to get a buck.. Ones I have worked with before were very polite and were more willing to work with me than those nasty ones...
However, give you a tip to try the next time you deal with one of these jerks... Turn the tables on them.. Find a device (i prefer a whistle) and when they start yelling, blow it in their ear.. Trust me, it is therapeutic.. You have now pissed them off and you are still in peace.. Now, once you are done with blowing that whistle, you can tell them, "if you act appropriately, I will treat you appropriately, otherwise, I will continue to make your job the worst one you had..
If you still do not comply, I will just send a cease and desist letter to stop you from contacting me period.. Oh, did I mention I was recording this call.. Remember, it is a violation of the fair debt collection practices act to harass, annoy, or abuse the debtor.. This is what you are doing, so I am getting it on tape.. "
Try those to them.. I guarantee you it will work.. |

They're rude because the normal, nice requests that you pay what you owe--sending bills and reminders, for example--have not resulted in payment.
By getting stubborn and deciding not to pay when a bill collector is rude, you'd shooting yourself in the foot. You credit rating is probably getting worse and worse, and eventually that's going to matter to you, even if it doesn't matter now.
FWIW, I used to work medical collections--very nicely, I must add!--and we would stop contacting peopel who owed thousands if they made good-faith payments bi-weekly. Really, we wouldn't bother some poor guy who owed us $8,500 if he sent five dollars every two weeks, when he got paid, so long as he never missed a payment. Those accounts we did not turn over to our collection agency. The account of people who just wouldn't pay us anything for services already given, we did. |

If they swear or call you names you can file a claim. Try to record the conversation. Good Luck |

1. They work primariy on commision
2. They NEED that payment from you NOW, not later..that's how they feed their families
3. Not the sharpest tools in the shed! |

because they are commissioned. think of it as if I borrowed 2 grand from you to get my rent paid and pay some other bills... Regardless of the fact if I "just don't have it" you might still get pissed off that I can't pay you your money back... I spent it didn't I? so that's were they come from getting bent outta shape- plus if they don;t collect they look bad. its what they do for a living. |

Lady Luck is on the right track, but the other posters are kinda off the mark.
Bullying, intimidation, threats of legal action...etc, are all tactics used by collection agents. It's not like these people are personally offended that you didn't pay your bills, in all honesty they could care less as the only thing that matters is that you pay THEM now. 9 times out of 10 the collection agency has purchased the debt for pennies on the dollar, so the original creditor you owed the money to won't see a penny of what you pay the collection agency.
My advice is to read up on the FCRA and FDCPA as well as your state laws, so you know your rights and know how to combat these clowns. |

Because their job sucks. The probably work full time, sitting in a cubicle, headset on, constantly calling people to pay their overdue bills, and they usually ONLY get paid commission, so that means if they can get you to pay, they get money for it. Say you had an overdue book fine at the library for $80.00. And you didnt pay it. The library thinks they lost out on $80.00. So they will "sell" your account to a collections agency for a lower amount, say $30.00. So your credit has already been dinged at this point, and they call and harass you for $80.00, when they only paid $30.00 for it. they are making $50.00 off you if you pay them. Thats why you can usually talk them down, and say " If I pay it all at once, I'll pay $40." And they'll let you settle. Cuz they are still making money off you. Anyway, their job sucks hard, and they know they wont make money unless you pay, so they use scare tactics and threaten and get bossy. Its really messed up when you think about it. |

What you see as rude they see as what is necessary to get you to pay. If you take the attitude "I'm not going to pay if they are rude", you're missing the point.
They already were VERY nice to you. So nice that they loaned you money. You, on the other hand were rude to them by not fulfilling your obligations.
So since nice hasn't worked, you've broken the trust they placed in you, what do you expect them to do? Keep asking nicely? They will have. I bet you got 'friendly reminders' to please pay your bill. You didn't, I assume.
The next step would have been a little less nice. Probably a 'Please pay this amount Immediately'. Still no response?
Do you see the point? They tried nice, it hasn't worked. Beyond that, they have to resort to whatever works. That includes what you consider rude, what they consider forceful.
Don't 'refuse to pay'. That will NOT make them be nice. In fact, unless you see court cases, garnishment of wages, and potential bankruptcy 'nice', it's anything but. |

I luv Orlando Se Hablo Ingles !!
 |
They don't .My guess is they call so many people a day, that are rude and give them the same excuse. After a while anyone would probably have and attitude. Don't let them being rude ruin your credit. That will just give them more of a reason to call you. Pay the bill. |

Because they have already tried to be nice by sending letters. When you get calls, that collection agency is using more serious terms because at that point it is more serious. They are making hundreds of calls a day to people that don't want to talk to them. If every person that you called gave you attitude wouldn't you give it back?? Seriously, not paying is not hurting them, it's hurting you. The people who call you couldn't care less if you don't end up paying the money back. They do get commission but it's no big deal if they don't get your money. |
