They must verify your identity and make sure you provide the correct number. It doesn't matter where you were born because some non-citizens are eligible for SSNs. Likely she will accept an official print-out from SSA, but it depends on the employer. She might require you to bring the card in later. In addition, if they do not ask for a valid SSN, they can be fined.
When they pay you, they must report it to the IRS and send them your withholding, etc. You must fill out IRS Form W-4. Even if it isn't enough to owes taxes on, you may need to file a tax return. You also want to make sure your income is properly reported to SSA. This is important if you need to collect benefits. |

They have to report all your earnings to social security and even pay a portion of your check in to social security. I guess they have to have proof of your number in order to make sure they are following the law. |

I am surprised. I have never had to show my social security card, I just tell them the number if they need it. But I do have other ID as well. |

Yes, the print-out and receipt should do fine. She really only needs to have your social security number so that the school can report to the government how much you make, and then they'll take out whatever they take out for your taxes. |

all us citizens are required to have a social security card. they are issued at birth. how old are you? unless you have lost it your parents probably have it.
they need it for a few reasons.
1. to verify who you are, and the S.S. # you gave them is legit.
2. it will be used as a record of how much money you make at the job, thats how the IRS knows how much to tax you, and how you get your W2 in the mall so you can file taxes.
Social Security cards are also how your social security is tracked (the money you will get when you are old after you retire, that you pay into throughout your life) |

Welcome to the Machine. You will begin earning your quarters to get your credit for your check when you reach old age. You will be eligible for other benefits(Medicare) as well. It also proves to the employer you are a legal citizen and therefore a legal hire. |

One, you should already have a social security card. Two, a social security card helps prove you're a citizen. |
