Im not here | Why do people live way beyond their means? |
I understand owing money on a house or even a car, but why are people so in debt? We (our family) only spend money on things we can buy outright, no credit. Sometimes we have to save for several months, even years, to buy an expensive item, even though we could have put it on a credit card. Are we the only ones that do this? Many of my family members have even gone through bankruptcy and now they are back in debt! Why won't people put stop their compulsive buying and credit addiction? Additional Details We own 1 credit card but hardly ever use it. EMERGENCY only like when the car broke and it cost $1500 to fix that was put on credit, but paid off as soon as we could switch money from one account to another. |

well....some people think having expensive things show their status in life and lets face it...everyone want to be in the upper important status. The only reason why people buy those ugly hummers is to say they bought a hummer...those things are so ugh but everyone buy them like they're the most glamorous LOOKING things in the world. |

There are lots of reasons.
Sometimes it's just "trying to keep up with the Jones's". You buy things like an overpriced car or expensive TV's without really thinking of the long term consequences.
But don't blame stupidity on everyone who is in debt. I've counseled many people who got in trouble for things out of their control. House fire destroys most of their belongings, flood damages the home, engine drops out of the car, parent loses their job.....
To get by they live on credit, and things just get worse. It's not always due to irresponsible spending.
It's also caused by creditors making it far too easy for people to get credit, allowing those "irresponsible" spenders to compound their errors.
Better financial education in school will prevent a lot of this trouble. |

When i when to mortgage school this is what my instructor said "credit was made to fail, we need classes to learn how it works. Having a credit card and using it is not bad, not knowing how to use it, is" |

There is no really easy answer to that one. I'll give you my take on it. My family and I use credit, we don't see it as a evil thing, we just try to use it respectfully. We took a very nice vacation last year on credit, with no regrets. Why didn't we just save for it? It would take to long, bottom line. After we paid off the vacation, we purchased a big screen tv one of those 6 months no finance charges promotions. we'll pay it off before the interest accrues. We looked at our monthly finances and decided we could comfortable afford the payments. In today's world credit is so easy to get, college students get visa and MasterCard's at a drop of a hat. credit addiction can be just as hard to break as any other addiction. (try telling a teenage daughter she can't spend $250 bucks on her prom dress and see what happens). How do you get airline tickets, rent a car without a credit card? Unfortunately you and my dad (who never, ever uses his credit cards) are in the minority. |

Because people assume that using credit that you QUALIFIED FOR *is* living within your means. The credit industry checks income and payment habits before issuing credit. They then issue a credit LINE based on the individual's income, and existing credit. So the myth is that if an institution extends a specific line of credit, you can afford it.
I guess people define "living beyond their means" differently. For me, as long as I can comfortably pay for my debts, I'm within my means. It's great that you have a cash payment policy, but I think the average person doesn't want to wait six months or a year for something that they can have today and just pay off over time.
From what you say, you don't avoid buying things, you just pay for it differently. I suppose the real answer is to each his own, I guess. Who cares if you're going to buy it anyway and you choose to pay cash or credit if you can afford it? |

I bet you people just can't differenciate between their need and want, and don't know where the limits are. |

Not the only ones, but probably close. And that is great that you do that. But most people enjoy buying things now, even if they cant afford it. I liken it to obesity and self gratification. People want to satisfy themselves, they want to do it now, and as often as possible. |

I blame the TV and by their need to fund their programmes they allow advertising.

I personally have no money, because I spend all of it taking care of animals because people won't have their animals spayed or neutered. In the town I live in you can have an animal spayed/neutered for $10.00. That is really cheap, and worth every penny! |
