This is a very good question. I believe there are probably a lot of different reasons why some people give long answers. I don't think you can sum it up in just one answer. Sometimes people may give a long answer because it takes one to adequately sum up their thoughts on the subject. Other times maybe they give a long answer because they are thinking of it as they are typing and they are not sure where they are going until they get there. Another reason for long answers may be that the person lacks certain writing skills like editing, or perhaps they give a long answer because they have great writing skills and want to show them off. I suppose there could be any number of other reasons for long answers like they just want to annoy people who like short answers, or they are attempting to show off. Maybe they are trying to convince you that their answer is right and they think a long argument will be to their advantage I don't really mind long answers if they are relevant and well written. I do not like long answers when they have obviously just been copied from some other source, cut and pasted into the answer box. Whether an answer is long or short I want it to be the writer's own original ideas and writing. To me the fact that it is orinal is far more important than the length. I hope this answer has helped you understand some of the reasons for long answers. I could probably come up with more reasons, but I don't want my answer to get TOO long, and I doubt if you read all the way to here anyway. |

Forget the long answer, I don't mind that as l ong as it pertains to the question that was asked.
Try getting 446 answers to one question. It's too hard to pick a best answer out of so many good answers. |

Because an answer that leaves you walking away with more questions is not a good answer!
And answers that do not give background or sources are immediately ignored. |

They think they'll get best answer. It doesn't work with me, though. I like short and sweet. |

They may be trying to help as much as they think they can, or maybe they feel the answer can't be boiled down into a short sentence. |

It is spelled as "answer" and not ansure. And they type so they can help others understand more. Instead of being Critical Appreciate the effort that others make for you.

Like Zaley said, reading and writing can be fun. And, if one is a good typist it really doesn't take long to type out a long answer. Doesn't take nay effort at all. |

Are your really sure that it is there own answer? I see a lot of copy and paste articles, especially from Wikipedia. Some give long and thorough answers to help and plus, yes to ensure a best answer. Plus yes, if it seems like the Asker's is serious & really wants to know, the more likely an answerer will take his or her time out to help. |

They're trying to be thorough.
Also, it takes more time to think about the wording of an answer to make it concise than it does to just type out the long thought that comes to mind. |

You ask "...but what is the use it takes so much time and stuff..."
When the asker chooses your answer with the notation on how helpful it was or e-mails you thanking you for giving them that information it is very rewarding.
The nature of the question determines the length of the answer.
It may seem to take a lot of time to you personally to write a longer answer. To someone with experience or knowledge in that area it may be a pleasure to share their expertise.
And if you appreciate proper spelling and correct grammar, a well written answer is even more of a pleasure. |

Either they are passionate about what answer, the question to them needs a long answer, or they just like to talk and be heard. Or all of the above...Tards. |
