go to download.com and search for AVG Free, there are multiple versions of the anti-virus, the most basic one is free, but they will try to get you to upgrade to the "better" versions and pay.
I just use the basic, its good enough for a home computer.

Sorry i don't recall how to download AVG, but it IS FREE on a 2/3 monthly basis. When AVG remind you your fee is due, you just download the free trial period again and so on, and so on. You can of course BUY the full package.

they sell lots of different paid for version, but still off the free one if you look hard enough. the spyware/antivirus is free for the first month so its probably not worth installing that if you dont want to be paying for it.
