It is called 'float'... and basically it takes time for the check to physically make it to the issuing bank.
Also, your bank may have a policy to ensure checks above a certain amount clears before giving you the money. With good credit, and relationship with the bank, they may waive this and give you some or all right away. |

When you pay by check the banks have to verify the account and that the funds and everything are in it. With the credit card system they immediately post it to your card but it still takes two to three days for it to post to your credit card account. Meaning you can make a purchase/purchases and you could exceed your account because everything posted to your card on the same day. |

checks take longer to clear if the person writing the check is doing business with a place that doesn't bank at the same place as you do. Federal Reserve processing takes several days to complete---this is why so many places are processing your transactions via electronic! |

Checks are starting to be put through electronically, which will put the check through immediately. I can write a check to a store and go online to my online banking and by that evening the check I wrote at the store may have already cleared. This is a new thing, so be careful. People use to write a check and not have enough money to cover the check, figuring they'll cover it the next day. It's getting to where we won't be able to do that anymore because the checks are starting to go through immediately. I think it's up to individual stores and what system they have set up for handling checks. |

a check takes several days to clear so they can check to make sure the person or whoever is writing the check doesn't bounce, they need to also make sure that person does not have any other checks out . If paying by credit card or debit, the credit is always there its computerized if credit is not their you get declined so the check wont bounce coming from debit and with a credit card you'll get declined as well so you wont go over your credit card limit |
