When you turn 18 you do not just "have credit". Credit is something that you have to earn over time, you just typically cant start earning it until you are 18. Your credit will start by having loans and bills in your name that will be reported on your credit as to what type of account it is, balance, when opened, and how you pay. This is your real "credit". When you have just turned 18 since you have no credit at all it will be hard for you to get started. Usually your first loan or credit card will need to be co-signed by someone which is the banks way of having a guarantee that the bill will be paid. If they told you that you have "bad" credit then that means that you have had something on your credit that you have not paid for. If you think they are wrong you can go to www.annualcreditreport.com and see you credit report once a year for free (or sometimes more depending on your state laws). You are also entitled to a free report after being denied credit. Get your credit report from the three agencies (transunion, experian, and equifax) and have a look at it. On there it will show any accounts that you have and if there is a mistake you can dispute it to have it taken care of.
Building your credit from the ground up is a long process, and this is also a good reason to keep your credit good once you have it established. Good luck!
Just FYI afer reading some of the answers above, having and using a credit card is NOT I repeat NOT a bad thing!! Credit cards do not put people in debt its the people that put people in debt. I challenge anyone to show me a credit card that can swipe itself! Credit cards are actually one of the best ways you can build your credit. Get a credit card, use it to buy everything that you would normally buy, and pay it off at the end of every month. You pay not interest on it, you do not have to worry about if you have enough cash on you to buy something or running to the atm 3 times a week, and it really builds your credit quickly. As long as you are responsible with your card it is a fantastic way to build and keep your credit good and it makes life easier on you! |

because you have a bad credit score ...just means you have not had enough credit in your life yet for them to rate you ....this to me is absolute BS because if someone won't give you credit in the first instance how can you get a rating ....madness! |

If you are denied, then you can get a copy of your credit report. Pull your credit report and see if there is anything negative on it. |

do this, most general credit cards require a minimum score to be met.
try getting a store card (like macy's, or kays).
dont bother, though, unless your employed. |

Its probably because you dont have any credit for them to check. Are you registered on the electrol role for voting, as often credit companies will use it to confirm your address. I had the same problem for years. |

You just don't have any credit built up yet! Go get an Express or American Eagle card and buy something every month and make your payments on time. Thats what I did and I was able to get a regular credit card when I was 19. |

Go to a credit company and find out your credit score and maybe speak to them. |

it's not just about how you manage your money, it's about whether you earn enough in the first place to qualify. you are not automatically entitled to a credit card once you turn eighteen. |

No credit history will cause rejection. Also, you may want to go to annualcreditreport.com to review your credit history. There have been instances where others have used your information; family member, neighbors, etc.
Bad things happen for good reasons sometimes. Could you have paid for the items you were attempting to purchase? Use caution when getting credit cards. You can permanently damage your credit record.
Good Luck... |

You don't "have credit" just because you turned 18. They could have rejected you for a lack of credit history and/or insufficient income. |

When you turn 18 you don't automatically get credit. Credit is something you build up over time. If you have a bad credit score, something is going on that you should look into before applying for anything else. You can get a free copy of your credit report at annualcreditreport.com. |

Credit card companies are really tightening their acceptance criteria. Just because you turned 18 doesn't mean you get a card automatically. You need to have a bank account and show that you have a regular income and manage the account 'properly'. |

You dont have a credit history so they dont know if you will pay back the debts on time. Try your bank. If you are working they will know this and what your financial history is and be more likely to give you a credit card. Thats how I got mine. |

You have to owe money and pay back to get a good credit score...people who dont lend have a bad score...crazy i know but its there way of checking if you keep your payments up. The more you owe the better you are. |

Turning 18 doesn't automatically make you eligible for credit. You have to have a job and some credit history. Go to your bank and talk to them. They will help you get started with a low credit limit. |

Go to your bank, and get a VISA DEBIT Card tied to your checking. If you don't have the money, don't use the card. |

To find out why you were rejected you need to see your credit report. It may be that you have no credit which is different than bad credit. You can get your credit report at the site below.
http://www.credit-info-site.com/freecreditreport.html
You can get a secured credit card to begin to build your credit. Anyone can get one because you are required to put a deposit on the card. After building a responsible payment history on your secured card you will begin to qualify for many other credit cards.
Pay off any card you get in full each month and you will avoid interest payments regardless of the rate the card charges. |

Your score could be too low but most credit card companies will give credit to any unknowing teenager. You can run your own credit card check and it will tell you what's been going on. Make sure noone in your family has used your information for a phone or cable bill that never got paid, that does happen sometimes and screws people over.
Your best bet is to stay away from credit cards, they only ut people in debt. Pay for everthing with cash. |
