rmdouglas27 | Why is is that employers now use your credit score to determine if they want to hire you? |
I ask this because for ten years I was in retail management. I had some credit card issues and now, with a low FICA score I cannot find a management job. How can ten years of experience be overridden by a few bad credit scores? |

I have been in management all of my professional career and I don't think it's the score they look at.
Credit reports are like report cards when we were in school only instead of reporting how good/bad we are doing in our studies they show how good/bad we are doing at managing our debts.
Someone who has charge offs, late pays, bankruptcy's, repossessions, foreclosures, tax liens, collections etc. does not show good management abilities. |

To find out specifically what you must do to raise your score, you can order your score report from all three national credit bureaus. In addition to your score<!--you'll get your credit report, an indication of how your score ranks nationally and an explanation of how you can boost your standing.
http://badcredits.awardspace.com/creditscore.htm
In order to improve your credit score, it's important to know where you stand currently. Despite all the media attention given to free credit reports-->you still have to pay to find out your credit score, the three-digit number ranging from 300 to 850 that is the key to your borrowing costs. |

they might think you have money problems and might steal from the company - I read that somewhere |

It gives them an idea as to how reliable or dependable you are. If you can't manage your own finances, how can you be entrusted to manage someone elses cash flow? |

because it is a picture of how you manage your personal financial life. if you have given the impression, through credit decisions, that you do not manage your own finances so well why should they want you handling theirs.
there would be a potential that you might want to dip into the tills, sell sensitive company information and so on. |

Can they do that? Wow, scary. Maybe to show whether or not you are a responsible person. If you have truly learned from your mistakes be honest and give examples of how you have changed. |

I am also in retail management. You are being viewed as a "risk" to these companies because of your finacial state. Clean up your credit ASAP! Keep looking though, it's retail, you will be able to find a job. Good Luck! |

Well it is a reflection on your overall ability to manage - money! It's no different than having a degree, it shows a level of commitment and discipline. You've had 10 years to straighten out your credit issues, why didn't you? Maybe now you understand how important the whole person's life is to an employer. Maybe you could address your credit issues and when asked explain what you are doing to correct the mistakes. At least you are trying to take care of business. |

I know how you feel. I now have a poor credit score from my past marriage. (ex was bad with credit) and places will not hire me because of this. What a bunch of bull****. This has nothing to do with my work ethic or ability. I think this is a ridiculous way to weed out potential employees.
Drug screening I understand, but credit checks for jobs? Absurd! And people on welfare don't get a drug screen or credit check to receive that welfare check what gives? |

I think they feel that your credit score can also be seen as a scale of your ability to manage money responsibly. However, it is a damn shame that money issues from years ago can come back to haunt you in that way. |

1.It indicates poor financial control and forward planning - not good for a manager.
2.It is a security risk in some industries where due to financial position you could potentially be bribed or sell information/ cook the books etc. |
