Why is it better to have a CREDIT CARD rather than a DEBIT CARD?

Well so far the answers have all missed one important point. In order to book a hotel room, book a flight, make reservations, rent a car and in most cases buy something on line, only a CREDIT card can be used.

Credit cards are reported on your credit report thus building your credit history and credit score. DEBIT cards do none of these.

Also, in case of an emergency and you need to pay for something, unless you have enough funds in your checking account to cover it, your in trouble. A credit card allows one access to pay in case of emergencies such as vehicle breakdowns when you do not have the available funds at that time.

BUT there is a down side also, if one is not careful, they could wind up paying a lot more for the use of that credit card.

Hope this helps answer your question.

It is not. Especially in this time where the economy is not exactly hot. You will pay shed loads of interest on a credit card, where a debit card will only let you use what you actually have to spend. This may sound boring now, but wait until the first repayment letter comes through for the credit card.........

Good luck and choice for the future.

Building your credit is always a good idea. You cannot build credit with a debit card. Just remember, pay your credit card off every month so you do not get in trouble and do not have a ton of cards in your name, stick to one or two good ones that give you rewards. Bank of America offers a great credit card with a low limit (I have one with a $500 limit) that I use to buy groceries and pay it off every month. I always have the money on hand (so I can pay it off without getting interest tacked on every month). That way my credit score is good and they see that I am a responsible person and it improves my credit.

Some people prefer a credit card to improve their credit rating. With a good credit rating, it is easier to purchase a house or a car, or get a loan.

If you are trying to build credit, a credit card is better. It will show how you repay loans. I personally think, a debit card is better. It teaches you to live within your means. It also means you won't be reducing your income buy paying interest.

You'll never be able to get a mortgage if you are ever interested in buying a house, as you need established credit, and Credit Cards are an easy way to build up credit. If you are responsible it works very well. I use both Debit and Credit.

It's not. A debit card only pulls funds directly from your checking account. After you pay with a debit card, the transaction is paid for it, you don't have to worry again. A credit card is "crediting" you for the funds. So after you pay with a credit card, you're going to get a bill for the amount of the transaction, PLUS interest. So you're going to end up paying more for whatever you bought, and while you are building up your credit if you make all your payments on time, it's really easy to get into debt this way and potentially ruin your credit. Stick with a checking account and debit card.

Its not, you can get in debt with a credit card, and get in a bad position, but with a debit card, when you money is gone, its gone.

I dont think its better. Whatever you charge on a CC you pay interest. With a debt card you don't however you need to have money in the account before you can charge on it. Its easy to charge on a credit card and hard to pay it off. I know I have 3 credit cards with about 10 thousand to pay off.

a credit card improves your credit and you don't have to have cash readily available..whereas a debit card is money that you already have and is deducted immediately after you've made a purchase. I prefer debit so that I don't go into debt.

JayB
It's not. A debit card is better. A credit card means you're borrowing money. A debit card just draws down your bank account (money you actually have).

A credit card will secure anything, rental cars, etc. I'm not sure it's better. If you want to build credit only charge 10 % of your balance, to make it appear you spend wisely, and use a debit for life.

alllli4
im pretty sure its better to have a debit card cause you arent borrowing money, you are using your own.

I won't say it's better. Debit cards dont have interests, finance charges, and it's your own money- not a 'borrowed' money.
Whats just good about credit cards are.. they build your CREDIT.

kiy
well i'm 16 and i have my own debit card..
debit is better because it's YOUR money..
credit means when you use the card you owe them a huge lump of money a month...

because you can build your credit if your responsible..... if your not responsible.. it can ruin your credit.... its best to start with a debit card

Billy bob jr.
Now days they are both the same.

But in reality

Debit card takes the money straight from your checking account
Credit card you will owe them money and pay extra for their interest.

Adam L
credit card is better because you don't have fees for each time you use it. But you are borrowing money and have to make sure you have it.

gmr_2122
Well in a debit card it means you'll pay later and it's hard to know all you are going to owe later on and your money might not be enough. A credit card takes away money from your account immediately, and you always know how much you have right at the moment.

If you have little money per a certain amount of time then a debit card is better. You might not have enough money now but later you might. It's harder to keep track but efficient.

But in my parents' you can use both debit and credit.

how old r u? credit card are a mess.. debit is money u have homies. SHOPPING! :P ;p :P
