Why is it that when you use a credit card sometimes you have to sign and sometimes you don't?
The gas station never requires a signature. The grocery store or retail store usually does. Even if the amounts are the same. Who determines when you need to sign, and when you don't?

The agreement between merchant (the store) and the credit card processing company.I

f the store wants easier (faster) processing, they can elect to have a higher "Signature" amount, but will increase their risk level by being responsible for that amount if it is disputed.

Zero risk would be to require a signature for all transactions, but would take a little longer. So if the store has a lot of business, they may ellect to "bypass" the signature.

Debit you don't have to sign , you just punch in your pin number. Credit you need to sign, but in PA where I live, they just passed a law anything under $25 does not need a signature.

when you use an automatic gas pump, you don't have to sign but if you're in the store you have to sign the receipt

It depends on the laws in the area.

I have been told there is a dollar limit on a transaction for signature. One place says fifteen dollars another says thirty dollars. I think it might be a policy of the store or the clearinghouse.

Happy Mama
it is really up to the store

Credit Guru
Whether you sign or not is dependent on the credit card processors policy. The Visa/Mastercard association sets the "interchange rates" for all of the different types of credit card transactions(gas, hotel, airline, retail, etc) and when you are required to sign and not sign. The companies that charge the businesses a discount rate when you use your credit card pay different rates pay different amounts based on risk, transaction size, etc.

As a consumer what you need to do is protect your bank & credit cards and be aware of what you charge and where you charge to prevent fraudulent charges.

The business decides and usually does require a signature save human tendency to not do the job completely. Gas stations now require billing zip codes be entered for credit purchases at the pump. If you pay inside you will sign though.
