I need a credit card for college, but I get turned down. I got my credit report, and there is no blemishes on it. Actually, there's not much on it at all. I also don't have the $200.00 to "buy" a card like so many places require. |

You don't have credit established. You may not have stated your income as the minimum they require. Listing a bank account with something in it can help. Many banks have checking accounts that use MasterCard Debit Cards. Good anywhere a MasterCard is. I know KeyBank for sure. |

Why do you "need" a credit card for college? You SHOULD NOT get a credit card!!! You are setting yourself up for a lifetime of paying on this thing. You never get credit cards paid off. If you can't afford what you are trying to get on a credit card, how are you going to make the payments, and the late fees and the over the limit fees, etc.? And one credit card leads to another, and another and before you know it, you are so in debt before you even get out of college. Please try some other way to buy what you need, without getting a credit card. You can buy used books, or used furniture or whatever. You can get a part time job. When you "buy" things on credit cards, you can't afford it. |

Do you have a savings account?
Do you have a checking account?
Do you have a job?
If you don't hsve any financial history that company can look at and decident whether or not you are competent with money, then there is no way there are going to give you a credit card. You need to establish your credit history in order to qualify for credit. |

The more times you request credit cards, the less likely you will be to obtain one. I'm unsure if you realize this, but every time you apply for credit it goes on your official credit record and sends up a red flag to credit companies that you may be taking on more debt than you can financially handle. If you have been denied, don't apply again and again, it hurts your record.
The stress of having credit card payments while in college may be more than you want to go through. They are such a temptation for college students and the bills run up so quickly. Many students end their college years with a degree and a huge amount of debt. I would suggest a part-time job during the school year and a full-time job in the summer for things you need. Try to steer clear of credit as long as possible.

Stop, I repeat stop applying for a card. No one will give you a line of credit without having some sort of (good)history. Applying for credit is making your score lower with each application. ( you have zero bad history, keep it that way and read on)
You must find the money. Beg and borrow 300+ bucks from a friend. Then...............
Visit a major bank near you. Bank of America etc.
Tell them you wish to open a secured credit card and you have 300+ bucks to start with.
Not all banks do this. So keep trying until you find one that does.
Don't get a secured card online. I repeat, don't get a secured credit card online. The fees are high and often. You have to mail the payments in which many times will be late making you pay more in late fees and also trashing your credit let alone costing you money you may not have.
Once approved you will get your card in 1-2 weeks.
Use your card for everything. I mean everything possible. BUT. Now here's the kicker. Never buy anything ever if you do not have the funds to pay off the whole balance right then and there. I don't mean future funds either.
A credit card is not a loan. Even if it's unsecured. It's a convenience. You don't have to carry cash. You lose your cash you cannot get it back. You lose a card, they send you new one in a few days.
Pay off whole balance before grace period. This action does 4 things:
1) You save money by paying no interest.
2) Your credit score will move higher
3) In 12 months the major bank you opened your card with will un secure your card and get this; increase your available limit!
4) After two years the major bank you opened your card with will stop charging you a yearly fee AND lower your interest rate (although this won't matter because you're now a disciplined card user and never pay interest anyway, RIGHT?). |

I always thought that college students were offered many credit cards. Try different credit cards until you are accepted by one. One tip though: don't let them run a credit check on you unless they have decided to let you have their credit card. Every time a check is run your credit score drops. Call each one and try for approval over the phone. |

bad credit is better than no credit. and if you dont have steady income you can forget about it. |

Nobody "needs" a credit card. What you need to do is to spend what you have, not what you are loaned by banks who only have their own corporate interests at heart. |

go and get a store card and use that for a while. if by some chance you can't even get one of those, go to your bank and get a secured card. |

Get a low-credit card from a department store. You only get $3-500 of credit, but it helps you establish credit. Or, open a checking account that offers a free debit card. That's what I did. |

one of the easiest ways to start establishing credit is through a federal stafford loan for school. secondly, get a job. if you don't have time to work off campus find out if you qualify for work-study (yes, that is a real job). if these aren't options for you find out if a parent might be a co-signer for you to get a credit card. if not, you better start saving money. |

You know why do all you people nag people about credit cards if they choose to have them let them be. Try Capital One not one of the best but ones that will give you a chance alot of the time. I don't know if they are still around but I had a First Card Visa when I was 18 try them.
The problems is, is it is worse to have no credit then bad credit. But don't listen to these people you want to establish credit without credit you can't buy a new car or a house. Just be responsible and you will be fine :) |

Lie about your income on your next CC application. They never check.
By the way, a credit card in college is the BEST way to ruin your credit. Worked for me.
(in college you have no income, so you can't really repay, can you?) |
