You can make an appointment and bring proof that someone is still using your number: http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10064.html#getting . In extreme circumstances, if you have been unable to resolve the identity problem, then they'll give you a new number.
Other things you can do short of getting a new number that many people don't know about is that you have the ability to add a comment to all of your credit reports. You can place restrictions on your credit report so that, for example, credit can only be applied for in person instead of online. You can go to the Websites for Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union for details. Also, make sure that you get copies of all your credit reports and dispute every fraudulent entry. You can actually do all that online by going to the aforementined credit bureau sites. |

Getting a new Social Security number
If you have done all you can to fix the problem and someone still is using your number, we may assign you a new number. We cannot guarantee that a new number will solve your problem.
You cannot get a new Social Security number if:
You filed for bankruptcy;
You intend to avoid the law or your legal responsibility; or
Your Social Security card is lost or stolen, but there is no evidence that someone is using your number. |

I would think if you got a new number you would lose everything you have paid into the original number. It seems you would want to get your original number with all your credits. |
