Will credit card companies finally ignore you if you don't return their calls for an extended period of time?

Star Dust
Ahem....When you ignore the credit card company, they will give your account to a collection agency. If you ignore the collection agency, the credit card company will then sell your account and a few hundred other uncollected accounts to a law firm. The law firm will then send you a demand letter giving you 30 days to pay in full or make payment arrangements. If you ignore the law firm's letters, the law firm will file suit against you for the amount due on the credit card PLUS the maximum amount of interest allowed by your state, PLUS 25% attorney fees, PLUS all the court costs of filing the suit. If you are served with the suit papers and then ignore THAT, then the law firm takes a judgment against you and puts a lien on your property and garnishes your wages and garnishes your bank accounts. Garnishment is usually what makes a debtor stop ignoring the debt. I have piles of this stuff around me right now. In fact, I filed three garnishments this morning.

If you owe money to them then they will not just "go away."

Hickhouse
Yeah, but you can't buy a home until it's paid off, even if it's like 10 years later and not affecting your credit. Good news is that the clock on your credit has already started - the date the company called it a bad debt. That's what I love about this country, you're never more than 7 years away from perfect credit.

chevy87fanatic
Yes, they will turn you over to a collection agency so they don't have to deal with you anymore.

Credit card companies aren't calling you, but collection agencies are. They probably have an auto dial system and it just goes through the loop.

If it is for a collection, no matter the amount, NO. They will maybe stop sending you mail directly and have their collection agency deal w/ you. They are very tenacious.

If they are calling you to get you to apply for a credit card, go to www.donotcall.gov and register your number and in about two week you will stop getting all telemarketer calls.

Disillusioned
Yes, they will do that very thing, ignore you while they are getting your account ready to send to a lawyer, who will in turn place a judgement on you for the amount that you owe them.

TeamJester
yes...then you hear from the collection company!

cutygrl
NO! Chances are they'll hound you 'til you pay!
