Will cutting (cancelling) a card end unauthorized charges?
I'm wondering if, in the event of identity theft, a simple call to the card company to cancel will disable the thieves from further use of the card and the numbers that represent it. Is it that easy? I make plenty of international online orders and want to make sure what the deal is on financial "defense" in the event of a mishap.

First of all, a CALL to a credit card company to cancel a card doesn't cut it. You MUST put your cancellation IN WRITING in order to be effective and to create a paper trail in case something goes haywire. I would also send this type of letter by a method that will get you a delivery receipt so they cannot say they 'never received it'.

Secondly, as mentioned, if the account has a balance they will never actually close the account, and other charges can get thru. What you would need to do, additionally, is make sure that you notify the card company that you've been the vicitim of ID theft and fraud and any charges after a given date are the result of the theft. Again you MUST do this in writing.

#1 rule.. if it ain't in writing, it never happened !!

If you or anyone you authorize to use the account has given that account number out, the other company can gain authorization. Authorization can be granted prior to your closing the account, and may be used after you have done so, so cutting or cancelling the account will do no good. As an employee of a credit card company, I have seen many "unauthorized charges" come through, simply because the biller is using an authorization code they were granted months in advance.

as long as your account has a balance technally it's still open

Angela
Yes. Call them immediately and the card will be declined amy place it is presented.

a reputable card business will resolved disputes

well, of course it will.

Once you have canceled the card, even if there are further charges against it, you should not be held responsible for them. I say "should not," because it's entirely possible you will get another bill, and you will have to call the credit card company and explain that you did report it on such-and-such date, and therefore the charges after that date are not your responsibility.

If, however, you know who stole it (a family member or something), you are obligated to pass that information on to the credit card company, or to the investigator they assigned to the case, if any.

Yes, if you call the CC company and cancel the card, then no new charges can be billed to it.

Canceling the card will from this point in time stop all transactions; however any processed prior to the cancellation of the card will process. You can file a Cardholder Dispute Inquiry Form to dispute earlier charges.

kc
you should call them and tell them it is lost or stolen and inform them of what specific charges are not yours. they will take those charges off of your account and investigate it. it happened to me and i called, they removed the fraudulent charges and then they just change your account number to a new one but CANCEL THAT CARD IMMEDIATELY - just change to a new account. they will know what to do when you call!! the sooner the better for u
