Will having a credit card with a co-signer help my credit or theirs?
i know i cannot apply for a credit card under my own name because i have no credit report since i am a college student. i have an available co-signer, but will this help my credit or the co-signer's credit when i use and pay my credit card bills on time?
Additional Details
i applied for my first credit card, and they rejected me. a couple days later, they sent me a letter stating that i didn't have credit history, which is the reason why they rejected me.

You apply for a credit card under your name and the joint person. This will give you credit so long as you pay the bill on time. Read the fine print because alot of credit cards are only 21 days to pay. If you default the burden falls on the joint person, which won't be so good. If you want credit your better off buying a car or taking out a loan and paying it back. Credit cards are a joke and make it to easy to get into debt. Also bankrupt laws have changed so it is not so easy to get them erased.

Unless you have bad credit, you can apply for a credit card. Credit card companies love college students, but if you do get a co-signer, it would benefit both when used correctly.

It will help both unless they have to many credit cards then it could hurt them.

monkeys mom
It will help your credit if you pay on time, but it will hurt both you and your co-signers if you don't pay on time.

if you cant afford to put money on your own credit card at a credit union then you shouldnt have one what ever you tell them you want on your card you give them first
when your done and built up your creit you will be able to get your money you astablished the account with and then have a real card co signs are bad i dont have any co signs
i dont have good credit in 2 more years i will though and you can too with out implimenting anyone

Your credit, tehy are just there for security reasons..says if you dont pay it will hurt the both of you, just not yourself

Being a college student does not mean that you have no credit report.

You should check with the credit bureaus. You can get free report from each of the three majors once per year. If you want your FICO score you will have to pay a small additional fee of about $5 per bureau.

You may be surprised at what is already on your credit report. It would be good to get inthe habit of checking your credit reports every year now. Personal financial knowledge is a powerful tool, and should be possessed by every young adult.

It will help yours. You should be able to apply for a card in your own name if you have had a checking account for a while - ask for a low-balance or secured card.

Charge a reasonable amount (like $100) and pay it off over 3 to 4 months. Wait a month or two and do it again. After a couple of years, you'll have a decent credit rating started.

It will help both. make sure you can afford your credit card though because if you default they can go after the co-signer even if you declare bankruptcy.

It will help or hurt both depending on if all payments are made on time

moosebreath
Both credit scores will go up or down depending how you handle the payment arrangements . Pay off early and it helps your score !

It will help both your's and your co-signer's credit - as long as you pay the bills on time! If you default on the card it will hurt both - and your co-signer will not be happy when they pull their credit report and see that.
