tana_warhol | Will it look bad if I cancel my credit card? |
I currently have 2 credit cards. I've had my visa for over a year and my mastercard for less than a year. My visa has a $1000 limit and my mastercard has a $500 limit. I'm planning on paying them both off completely, but I want to cancel my mastercard. My question is, will this lower my credit score? |

i had 7 credit cards and was $10,000 in credit card debt. thank God for dave ramsey's book Total money make over, today i am debt free and i use my debit card only(it hurts if i want to spend $ i don't have). yeee haw! this is how i did it
i set a goal to live debt free. just get passionate about it.
what i would recommend.
since u have only 2 credit cards u cat them up to stop using them. take the one with the least amount that u owe and attack it with as much payment as u can. all the while paying the minimum balance on the other one to keep it current. once u have paid off the first one and u get that bill that reads zero balance call them and cancel it then. then take the funds u were using for the first card and put them into paying the 2nd card, and follow the same process as above.
then decide to never have credit cards again. they are like snakes and if u play with them u get bitten. goodluck. |

The temptations to own a new credit card are so numerous in modern times that many of us end up with a purse-full of them without any real need. They stay there and cause a lot of problems in repayment. The confusion that comes with too many credit cards can easy lead to a missed payment and resulting penalties. Frequent defaults will reflect poorly on your credit score. So, keep only the necessary and discard the rest. Yes it will affect your credit score. Part of your score is your debt to avail credit ratio. Basically if you have a high limit with little to no balance your credit score will be higher than if you have a high limit with a high balance. If your not being charged an annual membership fee don't cancel it. You can cut up the card and not use but keep it still open. If you cancel it you'll lower your score. The more avail credit without a monthly balance your carrying over makes your score higher. |

If you cancel your credit card is it likely that the company will want payment in full at that time for any balance due on the account. You should pay off the card before you cancel it. If you are fearful that you may charge on the card, simply cut up the card or leave it at home tucked away in a file box. Once you pay off the card you may consider keeping it, just be careful only to charge about 25% of your limit and pay that off every month. This will help build your credit score.
Good luck! |

it may, i think it depends on how long you have had them for. you should try to consult a credit resolution company first. |

if you keep the cards don't cut them up, if you don't use them it look bad on your credit report because you are not showing any payment history. I suggest you cancel the higher credit limit account and keep the smaller one open to continue to build you credit score. |

Canceling card does not lower your score. Matter of fact keeping a low balance on a high credit limit increases it.
If you just want to close it to close it, I suggest leaving it open. Every once in a while charge something small and pay the balance off. The will increase your score in small increments. If you have spending control, I would suggest keeping it open.
If you try to purchase a home in the future, lenders need to see at least 3 lines of credit, one having a 2500+ balance, that is being paid on time or had been paid.
Hope that helps!

If you don't use it, then cancel it. Your score is determined by how you manage the available credit given to you. Believe it or not, but the credit agencies consider open unused accounts (even if they have a high credit limit) as a negative, because they consider that the unused account may be a potential source of credit that can be abused.
The best thing to do to establish your credit is have one longstanding account which you use responsibly - make a big purchase occasionally, but be sure to pay it off asap. Large revolving balances are bad. |
