Will marrying someone with bad credit effect my credit?
My boyfriend and I are talking about marriage. I have a good credit score. Never late on payments, usually always pay off loans early. His credit is not so good. He was in a car wreck and basically could not pay bills. He has paid off most debt since but still has a debt that we can not afford to pay at this time and he is disputing the amount also. My first question is if I marry him will that debt become my debt even though it happened before we were together? Second question if we wait until we clear up this last debt of his and get married his credit score is pretty bad will that effect mine?

Yes, if you open any joint accounts. Until he can build his credit, use your credit however he can directly participate by giving him limited power to help bring up your husband's credit report. Then once that is established, please just understand why he had bad credit to begin with before you consider any joint accounts. This does not mean you love him any less.
Any major purchases like a car, house etc. should only be in your name and they cannot be touched by his credit rating whether you are married or not!

His credit score will not affect yours unless you purchase something together, such as a car or house. I recently got married and wife prior to being married filed bankrupt. It was tough because I had to secure the loan for the house just on my income.

If you apply jointly for anything they will pull a joint credit report. This can cause items to blend over onto your future reports. Keep all applications seperate until his credit is better. You can help him be procative with that.

I write a blog on the subject of credit management, mortgages, real estate trends, etc. Check it out for more information that may be helpful.

I'm surprised none of these pro's here didn't touch on this.....

If you get married, and they sue your new hubby, then they can garnish HIS wages and HIS bank accounts. If you put money into his account they could actually get some of it. Any property in just HIS name can be seized.

Therefore, if your hubby is going to be the only breadwinner, or if you are going to live in his home, you will be effected.

That is not a major problem as long as you are aware of it and you take necessary precautions. Keep separate bank accounts, put the home and car in your name.

As mentioned, your credit scores do NOT merge in any way until you start taking out joint loans. What I recommend you do is start out your new life with your good credit. That means try to get loans in your name.

Then gradually start to help your hubby fix his credit by co-signing a credit card or small loan. It will be a few years, but eventually he will be in good credit shape.

The key is to keep your accounts seperate for a few years, and live off your credit score. You will do fine.

no marrying him wil not mess up your credit

Bad credit is one of the worst problems to have... however there exists a solution.

I will hereby talk from my personal experience.

I did debt consolidation a couple of years ago, however If I had to do it again I would pay to some minor details,
if someone wants to get out of debt today it is pretty easy with a debt consolidation plan, however it may get a bit tricky at times, I suggest you get as much information as possible online on this first,

a good place to start in my humble opinion is astraight to the point ebook with question and answer I found :

if it helps kindly remember me in your voting!.. cheers!

correct, it will another personals credit will only effect you if you file jointly

Sexy
it will not effect yours unless you let him use any of the crdit cards and you are late paying the credit card. or if you borrow money from a bank and it takes you too long to pay it back

If your credit standing is a higher scale than your love, forget a wedding, it will never work.
