Chelsea B | Will my bad credit affect my boyfriends good credit if we get married? |
I have HORRIBLE credit, and my boyfriend has near perfect credit. He owns our home, and vehicle, has a few credit cards, as well as a decent amount in savings. And I'm wondering if we get married will my bad credit will bring his credit score down? If we were to sell the house and try to purchase a new one after being married, would we be able to put the house in his name only and do this without involving my credit. I have no problem not being on the deed or mortgage, I just don't want my past mistakes to ruin what he has worked so hard for. |

You are in the very same position my wife was in 15 years ago....trust me, you will not hurt his credit one bit.
Debts that happened prior to your marriage will not effect him.
Now here is the good part....if you do your homework and plan carefully, you can use his good credit to help you improve yours.
Start by fixing what you can on your credit. Dispute items and try to get them removed. Settle any other debts (if they agree to delete them once they are paid).
Next, have your hubby co-sign for one or two credit cards in your name. Use them regularly, but PAY THEM OFF ON TIME!. And pay off the entire amount. Use those cards to buy gas and groceries, then pay them off every month.
If you need an appliance or something small, get it on credit and put it in your name (with him co-signing). This will open yet another item of credit on your report.
It's going to take 3-4 years, but if done correctly you will restore your credit. |

It'll effect your combined credit, not your individual credit. Now, if you both are on a loan together that goes bad, then it'll effect both of you. The opposite is also true. |

You will both retain your own individual credit ratings and simply getting married does not affect each others scores. You can apply for a loan or mortgage under just one name. The only way that your score will have anything to do with his is if you apply jointly for a mortgage or loan in which case they take a median of both scores together. Of iy you take out a loan together and one of you is responsible to pay and doesn't it will affect both scores. |

No, i believe it's not going to affect his credit, it's just your credit history,
after yall married, his credit is not going to be bad and your credit is not gonna get any better
it's just that probably everything y'all owned will be under his name

as long as you two stay separate on credit. don't add him to your credit cards etc... if you get a house, let his name only be on it till your credit gets better. |

when you are married have him get a low interest loan and pay off your debts. let him handle the bills since he ( no offense intended here) seems to handle finances better. within a year your credit should be alot better than it is now. |

Actually it's the other way around, if you get married, his credit will remain the same and yours will improve a bit... only if you guys get into some sort of account together, like a joioned credit card, or something |

Yep.
Eventually.
That's why some people don't marry people who have bad credit. (True story) |

yes, mam. it will. i am in the same boat you are in. just remember if the marriage goes south and you aren't on the deed you will have chance of getting anything out of the house. i would talk to a lawyer or credit counselor |
