Melissa F | Will my credit improve from paying off medical bills that were delinquent? |
I just paid off two small ($300) medical bills that had been on my credit report for a few years. They were reported monthly as "key derogatory". Now that they will be considered "charged off" will my credit score improve? |

The charge offs will be on your report for seven years after the date you paid them off completely. Short term - your score won't improve. Long term - it will. Also - when you go for a loan in the future and people mention the charge offs - you can say that those were things of the past and that you have made some changes in your life. If the charge offs were paid off say 5 years ago - that is something you can say to help win someone over to your side.
With all the future charge offs - negotiate a pay off only if they clean your record! Get this in writing! Why do you want to pay them off and still have the marks on your credit for 7 years? Be smart! Tell them that if you have to file for bankruptcy they won't get any money! That'll get their attention! Only pay the charge offs when you have it in writing that your credit record will be cleared.
Good luck. |

"charged off' means charged off to collections--thats a bad thing! You dont want anything to show "charged off", you want it to show as "PAID"!
Your score may improve, but I'd have to know more about the rest of your credit report there's all sorts of other things that affect the credit score other than collection accounts. |

You should negotiate with these ocmpanies to get them to report on your credit repor that they were paid in full, not charged-off. This typcially means that you didn't pay them and they wrote them off. Another thing that can hurt your score is if you pay the agreed amount, but it is not the full amount owed. Be sure to get them to show it as paid to help your credit score the most. |

probably after 1 year |

If you paid them IN FULL (not a settlement offer) then they should not appear as Charged-Off -- Charged-Off is the Uncollected portion (such as in a settlement offer) |

It should, once the credit reporting agencies get the information. However, the fact that the accounts have been reported delinquent will still remain as a factor in your credit report. This info eventually "fades away," as older information is dropped off.
Your score is derived by factoring a lot if things, such as how much you earn, how much you owe, late payments reported, delinquent payments, defaulted payments, bankruptcies, debt to income ratios and many more, including how many credit checks have been run. |

probably be sure to get a letter b/c now youll have to go to the 3 bureaus and have them take it off your credit report. when you get the letter go to freecreditreport.com get your free report and start removing them off your report that way. |

Anytime you pay something off it will help, because that will be one less thing the lender will need to ask you about the next time you apply for credit some where. The bad news is that in my past, delinquent medical bills never played a factor in my getting approved/ or not approved for credit. I bet the majority of the population has delinquent medical bills because our country is doofus and won't go to a univeral health care system...but that is a whole different ball of wax. But to answer your question I would say you would gain a few points for paying them off..litterly just a few. |
