Will my hus bad credit influence mine?
My husband just settled two credit cards under his own name. Will that bad credit history influence my credit score?
Sb told me it will only influence me when we are trying to buy a house together.

No, his history will not affect your score. Your score is yours, and yours only.

Whoever told you about the house, was correct. Any time you go in TOGETHER on something, his score will affect yours.

To fix it, I would suggest getting his name on some things that you know you will pay monthly. Even if it is just as an authorized user on one of your cards (he doesn't even have to have the card to be a user, and gain good marks) Because the longer you avoid using his name, the longer his score will suffer. Credit works against you if you have negatives, and then do not start trying to re-establish.

Good luck!

That is correct, his credit will not directly affect yours, but if you apply jointly for anything both credit scores will be considered and that could affect your rates or approval.

I'm in California, and I do recall about 10 years ago I had an aquantence who had terrible credit (fraud, lots of bad debt, etc. - all based on her own very bad behavior). She remarried and when she and her husband filed joint taxes the Feds attached his tax returns (she didn't work) which were substantial.

your credit score is yours and yours alone.

Definitely will hurt your chances of getting a loan. A credit check is done on both people. If one is bad, both people are rejected. Especially in today's troubled market with all the pending foreclosures; banks and lending institutions are being more careful of who they lend money to.

Although they say each person has their own credit and credit score, you'll find as time goes by that when it comes to acquiring things you want and need they have a way of using your spouses credit against, its the same with driving records if one spouses has a lot of points they hold it against the other !

Your score is your own, the problem will be for big purchases or cards that you want under both of your names.

if you didn't have a joint credit account it has nothing to do with your credit

when it comes time to buy a home, they will run both credit and that may cause you to not get the home or have a higher interest rate; the other option would be for you to get the house in your name only since his credit is weak

Sb is correct, it only hurts when you are trying to buy something big (house, car) on your credit. As they say when you get married your credit is his credit and his credit is your credit

I have heard that marriage doesn't affect either of your credit scores, unless you guys let it.

It shouldnt not unless something is in your name but since you said the cards are all under his name if he dont pay it it will show up on him not on you cuz u have nothing under your name! try and keep it that way dont mess yours up unless you know how to take care of you payments on time!! But as a house yes if you buy a house and its going to be under both of your names then yeah some will be on you!! Its like my husband and I we bought a house I wasnt able to sign for the house because where we got our loan at the people signing were the ones that had to have a job so since i didnt have a job I couldnt sign but he did have a job so the house is under his name!! although thats good cuz now I know I dont have a low credit score but then again I dont have anything at all!!

Theresa
You were lied to. Your married, it all influences.
