Will removing my ex-husband's credit card from my credit report make my score go down?
My credit report still erroneously show me as married and shows a new credit card (which I've never had access to or knowledge of) belonging to my ex-husband where he's carrying a balance at about 50% of the card's limit. I have one credit card which pulls directly from my bank account so I never carry a balance. I'd heard that credit scores are actually lower on people like me who have no debts. I'm trying to get a mortgage soon and I want to know if my credit score will go up or down by removing my ex-husband's credit card from my report.
Additional Details
The report shows my status as married. My ex-husband lives in another state and two of the three reporting agencys list his last three addresses as mine, as well as correctly listing my current address.

It could make your score go up a bit. It looks better to use less than 50% of your total credit lines. Since you have more credit lines without a balance it probably wont increase your score if you remove it.

However, when applying for a mortgage they will take that monthly minimum in account when determining your ability to repay. Which would allow you to take a smaller loan.

If you didnt know about the credit line call the credit card company. Explain your situation. They will either take you off (if you were an autherized user) or you would have to take further legal action if it is in case opened frauduelently.

Good luck.

Your husbands credit card would not be on your credit unless you are either on the card jointly with him, or as an authorized user. The credit bureau is not going to remove it just because you are divorced. Whether it raises or lowers your score depends on if you have other credit, how much etc. If you only have 1 card & no balance you are not going to have a credit score at all. You will have problems getting a mortgage with no score. I would suggest calling the credit card in question & finding out the status (whether he listed you as joint card holder or authorized user). Keep an eye on it regardless - you can also ask the card holder to remove you but you are responsible for any debt up till they do it.

If you are an authorized user on that account, it isn't impacting your score at all. If you are joint on that account, you definitely want to be removed as you are held liable for that account. Carrying balances of more than 30% of the available limit hurts your score.

Contact that credit card company by certified, return receipt letter. Indicate that you want your name removed from the account as your ex put you on the account without your knowledge or consent.

Dont care about your score just need to get his information seperated from yours.

Does that one card you have, have a high credit limit? If not then you would be considered "new credit" and it would make it difficult for you to get a mortgage any way. Financial institutions need to see that you can handle large debt(such as car loans, student loans) in a good manner. I have 4 cards which I pay on time, students loans, and car loan and am still considered "new credit".

As an authorized user theoretically his debt should not effect your score however it has happened to me. I was placed as an authorized user on my boyfriends card a several years ago just because he had a tendency to forget his wallet at times. Well he defaulted on his payments on this card about 2 years after getting it and MY credit score went down and also this was marked as delinquent on my credit report. I had to talk to the bank and the credit bureaus before they would remove it from my credit history. Its a safer bet to have it removed from your credit report in my opinion from what I hear anything more than 30% doesn't help your score.

Of course. Send all the credit bureau's a copy of your divorce, and the decree which will show that all his debt's are his and not being shared. In addition, contact the credit card company and demand that your name be removed from his credit card account, and then have them contact the credit bureaus as well. This should clean up the mess, but it may take a least a month for this to go through, as it will take time for the letter to be processed.

See if they have a fax that you can send the letter to, as this will speed up the delivery time.

Hey U, Yeah U..Get over here

no...AND it sounds like he may have opened the card using your name w/o your permission which would be fraud. so you could report him to the IRS
