PandaDude | Will this affect my credit? |
My dentist thinks I owe him $100. I disagree. If he reports to a collection agency, will that severely harm my credit even though I don't think it's my fault? |

Let me start by correcting some of the terrible answers here.
It's NOT your responsibility to prove you DON'T owe the dentist! He is the one that must prove that you owe the bill. It's called debt validation.
Most doctors/dentist participate in medical collection groups, and they will regularly send these types of bills to them for collection. And they WILL end up on your credit report, and they WILL have a bad effect on your score. It's a negative report!
So what you need to do is first read up on the Fair Debt Collections Act, and the Fair Credit Reporting Act to find out what your rights are.
Send a letter to the dentist TODAY and dispute the charge in writing. Demand that they prove that you owe this amount. Inform them that posting unvalidated information to your credit history is a violation of the FCRA and they can be sued $1000 for the violation. Tell them if they feel that you owe this, they must bring you to court and let a judge decide. Otherwise leave you alone.
But remember, if he does have a legitimate bill and it does go to court, not only will you end up paying the bill, plus court fees, you will have a judgement to deal with on your credit report.
So take another look at the facts, and decide if this is worth the gamble to you. |

YES. If the dentist turns you over to a collection agency, it will severly affect your credit rating. Another user responded earlier by telling you that it is cheaper to just pay the guy $100 and move forward. By having this information on your credit report, you will end up paying higher interest rates in the future. So, pay $100 now, or pay thousands over a longer period of time as the result of higher interest payments. |

Yep. And the collection agency will hound you until you pay. If you really think you don't owe him and you can't come to any solution, consider taking him to small claims court. |

If it's the only time you've been turned over to collections, I don't think it will seriously harm your credit. However, as long as collections hounds you to pay them, it will be a negative on your credit profile. I would consider getting an arbitrator to settle whether or not you owe your dentist. |

it will significantly effect your credit and end up costing you more in the long run it's a hundred bucks just pay the cash and tell the guy to piss off |

if information is reported to a credit bureau agency it can remain on your report for up to 7 years, even if you pay it off after it gets reported. Best bet is to not let it get to that point, pay the man and find a new dentist. |

If he takes it to a collection agency they usually give you a chance to dispute the claim. If it comes to that and they say you have to pay him either give in or take him to court. It would be cheaper to just pay it. Good luck. |

Hello, I do not believe he will report this 100.00 loss...maybe if it was a larger loss...such as for braces or etc....
No,it def.should not go against your credit report.you can file a disagreement with the credit reporting agencies,if it did...
..as I had a doctor bill I didnt pay,and it was the same way,I felt as though I didnt owe them the money and it never got put on my credit report.I pull mine yearly, and there were no negatives on my report whatsoever.
I wouldnt worry about it,but,if it makes you feel better....and lol so your dentist wont be rough on your teeth next time your in...lol you could pay up...if you have an extra 100.00 laying around....that way,it will be out of sight...out of mind....
Good luck sweety. |

If you can prove it is not your fault or that you do not owe the dentist, you can file a disagreement with the credit reporting agencies. |
