Yes it will. They will negotiate (or they are supposed to) a lower pay off figure of the various debts. This is a negative on your credit report.
Make sure the company you are using is reputable, there are many out there that promise and don't deliver.

no it wont hurt your credit, it will set you on the road to recovery though, although you don't need a credit counseling company to tell you what you need to do, you can do it yourself. Here is what I used.

Those credit companies get money from you TOO..they are ALL just another bill for you to pay every month!!!!
Our neighbors just lost everything because they used one of those credit companies to so called "HELP" them with their bills..also their credit is destroyed!!!!!
Find a bank or credit union to help you...Go online and get all 3 credit reports for free at www.annualcreditreport.com
Once a year you are allowed to get all 3 credit reports for free with love from UNCLE SAM..

It wont hurt your credit but it will show on your credit. I consolidated (will be out of debt in about 6 more months) and it showed up on my credit report when my husband and I tried to buy a house. We were unable to use my credit because it shows similar (but not the same as) a bankruptcy. I was told as soon as I am out of debt it will be removed but I cant say for sure. |

No it helps your credit because it shows that you are making the effort to pay those bills and besides the consolidation companies can get your interest rate down. It may take awhile to get the bills paid but it is worth it. Discover card is the one who told us about debt consolidation |

what you're essentially doing is you're paying someone to distribute your payments on your behalf. keep in mind though, if you're late on your payment to them, you're not just late to one creditor, you'll be late to ALL your creditors that this company pays on your behalf. that's another large reason these companies tend to "mangle your credit". they won't disburse payments to any creditor until they get paid. if you can do that, it may be a viable option as a last ditch effort. but if you can find a way to manage your debt on your own, that's the best way to do it.
if you're still in a bind and need some help, i'd highly recommend a debt consolidation loan through a bank, credit union or financial services institution (like american general or citifinancial) before you go through these companies. not only will you avoid "scams", but you're going to get rid of the credit card debt altogether. you're not getting out of debt, you're just moving it. but at least your credit card balances will be cleared. your credit score should improve as well as you are now on installment debt, not revolving. and one bill is easier to manage than several at a time. |

If you need credit counselling, your credit has already been hurt. They will set you up with a budget you can live with and pay your creditors for you so that they won't be bothering you any more. You need to go this route if you can't pay your bills or face bankruptcy. |
