Would debt be written off on death?
If I have no estate,no house,a few possesions,no savings but a large debt should anything happen to me would the debt be left to pay off by my relatives I am also single with no kids.

They would go to your estate. If any of your accounts are joint, they the joint name on the account would become responsible. No, they cannot go after family for the money owed if their names are not on unless their names are on the particular account. ***

i worked in collections and unless the debt is in joint name with someone else or you have had some one guarantor a loan for you then 99% of the time they will only go after you estate. Failing to collect on that they will write off debt.

No. The worst that could happen is that your few possessions would be sold off to go towards the debts. Your relative could not be touched. (UK answer, and probably the same in other English-speaking countries).

THEY WILL GO TO YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS. BUT IF A PERSON IS NO LONGER ON THIS EARTH AND HAS NO FAMILY, THEY WOULD PROBABLY JUST SELL YOUR PROPERTIES . THEY CAN'T DO MUCH ELSE, AT LEAST NOT TO YOU!!.

they will try chasing your loved ones, but all assetts and debts are reckoned up BEFORE they give the estate to benficiaries. If there isnt enough they have to write it off and add to everyone elses interest rates to cover the directors bonuses.

Yes, take the easy way out; kill yourself.

Your debt would go to the next in line. If you have a will, then it would go to whoever you stated will accept such financial things.

Your estate (any assets you own or cash) would pay off any of your debts it could. Relatives would only be responsible if they co-signed for your credit (which may be a requirement for nursing home admission mentioned). But they may also try to squeeze authorized users of credit, whether those others were responsible for the debt or not.

But for the most part, unless somebody signed something, had a joint account or ownership or community property is involved, your debt dies with you.

aliciarox
In some cases I've heard of, creditors went after family members for a deceased relative's debts. Most times they will just try and recoup what they can from your estate

coleblondehead
Whatever possesions you have will be sold
to pay off some creditors but the rest will
be charged off (this means they will take a
loss in their taxes),I know its not the credi-
tors fault but its not the relatives either,
theyre grieving and their responsability is
to pay burial expenses but other debt i
dont think so, at least I wouldnt do it. They
might try maybe to collect but youre not
responsible unless you cosigned a loan or
have a joint account with you, otherwise
no.no, no.

Well someone has to pay it so Yes your family would unfortunetly be the ones stuck to pay it. I know of some companies that will be nice and pay at least some of it off in the event of a death but usually the bill has to get paid one way or another. I used to work at a nursing home and it was very expensive to have services from us but when the patients died their family would be stuck with the bill and most people didnt like it and thought since the person died they wouldnt have to pay anything but thats really not fair to the company if they didnt get paid for their services. So the family was always left with the bill, but you have to think about your insurance too. If you have insurance and its good most insurance companies will pay off your debt when you pass away.
