cheekychick | Would i be left with the bill? please help? |
my partner of 3 years has just opened a joint account for us both we are not married, he has also just signed up for debt management as he was £24,000 in debt (not through me) now if anyhting should happen to him like death, would i have to pay off his debt even though i didnt sign anything? would it mean that i could be blacklisted because i cant afford to pay? and would the bank come to me to pay the interest or overdraft even if i couldnt afford it? would it spoil my chances of buying a house in future? im really worried as iv got 3 children under 6, im 25 and my partner is 40. has he put us all at risk? please help thank you |

You shouldn't be at risk of picking up any of his bills, they are his debts and they can't chase you for them.
However, DO NOT HAVE A JOINT ACCOUNT with him. Once you have an account with him, your credit files are linked and in terms of getting credit in the future - you won't!!
If you haven't signed anything, don't. If he has opened it already go down to the bank and have your name taken off. Ask them for the leaflets on how to get your credit file, and when you get it send back a letter of disassociation asking for his name not to be linked with yours, however, if you live together this may be difficult.
Down-loadable leaflets from experian explaining your rights and what to do are available on the link below. |

I wouldn't touch anything connected to him in a financial way, with a barge pole. Say no to anything joint, look after yourself and your children! |

I know in the US with your name on the account you are responsible for it. If you are really that worried, have your name removed. Seek a financial advisor for more detailed information and suggestions. |

you shouldn't be at risk unless you are in his will, however, the linked bank account will damage your credit rating (and improve his) and would probably be 'frozen' in the case of his death |

Not if you're not married. Although if it's secured against your house that could mean trouble. There is usually an option of paying a bit of insurance to cover things like unemployment and death, look into it if your worried. |

One of the drawbacks of playing house is that the obligations are very real. If your partner runs up debts on a joint account or joint credit card they will be looking to you for the debt. If its not to late separate your assets and keep them that way. Use a different bank and maintain your own credit cards. Even if you are married this is a wise idea. |

YOU CANNOT HAVE A JOINT ACCOUNT UNLESS YOU HAVE BOTH SIGNED. I WOULD CHECK THAT HE HASN'T SIGNED YOUR NAME WITHOUT YOU KNOWING. YOUR CREDIT RATING WILL ALREADY BE AFFECTED JUST BY LIVING WITH HIM AND HAVING A JOINT ACCOUNT. YOU NEED TO CHECK THIS OUT FOR YOUR OWN PEACE OF MIND. |

If your SS number is on it, and he goes delinquit or somthing happens to him they can legally go after you. Weather you signed or not. (if you didnt sign for it and he used your ss number thats fraud and you should file fraud charges against him). |

if you didn't sign anything i would make sure that he didn't sign anything for you....take your name off the joint account too....that way there is no chance since your not married.... |
