I am that man. Bad credit.
Good father, sought-after babysitter, hard worker, funny, trustworthy and trusted.
but
I have red that it is unwise for a woman to marry a man with bad credit---these articles, usually written by women (you know, the Suzy-Orman types) may be right, but I think that it is a pretty shallow way to make a decision. Still, women look for different things in men than we look for in women, and when security is high on the list, finances, and the conflicts that inevitably arise in almost every marriage surrounding money, must be taken into account.
A woman with good credit who marries a man with bad credit has several options---among them, don't change her name and keep the finances seperate. Bad credit can be the result of bad luck and/or poor organizational skills, both with which I am well-acquainted. |

Even though there is more to a relationship than finances, money is one of the main things couple argue about, as well as one of the main things couple break up over. Financial issues cause unnecessary strain on a relationship.
My advice would be not to marry someone who is in debt AND not looking to really get out of it. If they have a plan for getting out of debt then that is fine. |

well they may have made mistakes or had financial problems in the past, but what really matters is what they are like now. Do you think they are responsible with money now? Are they still in debt? Can they manage their money and their spending?
There are ways to get round the poor credit rating, although there is a possibility you will find it hard to get a mortgage etc with him.
If you are going to have joint finances, you need to be 100% sure you can trust him not to ruin your credit rating as well. What really matters is not the credit rating itself, but what it stands for, and whether his money problems are still an issue now and whether they are likely to be in the future |

It's a deceptive question isn't it?
Tossing the phrase "bad credit" around triggers all sorts of negative images, but the truth is that if someone is unfamiliar with credit (and how to maintain it) their scores are going to likely be lower. It doesn't mean that they're bouncing cheques all over town and skipping on debts, but it certainly gives that impression doesn't it?
Credit can be fixed, and ones scores improved, what's more important to the long term success of the relationship is how the two people manage their money AND their debts, if there is a huge disparity in this aspect there is going to be all sorts of friction down the road.
The short answer to your question? Yes. |

i did. this is both of our second marriage. when i dated my husband i was looking for a guy who could bring something to the table. i was a single mom and sick of being broke. i even had a checklist for the men i dated. my husband had new cars, a brand new home and a motorcycle and still didnt have A plus credit. My husband is one of those supernice but naive men who have a seriously high mantainence and chickenhead ex wife. we are currently paying off all her credit card charges. we argue alot about money but we are both in this for the long haul. he is my best friend and a great daddy so i would rather have that then stellar credit. i also couldnt blame him for his ex wife. i am a true believer that love conquers all!!!

Only if I were taking applications for a spouse. If I were marrying for love, no. Love grows stronger. Credit problems can improve & disappear in time. It is good that you are aware of the problem now so you are prepared. The spouse with good credit will have to finance everything in their name until credit scores improve for the other spouse. This obstacle can be overcome. Marry for love & nothing else. |

It's definately something you have to talk about before you get married. Can you handle additional debt? Are they responsible enough to stop spending or truthful enough to let you know about their background. Can you go over their credit report? Their debt becomes your debt and sometimes that equals a rocky marriage. |

People with bad credit normally get that bad credit by not taking responsibility for their own bills and lack of financial management. I wouldn't want to hire an employee with such flaws and I most certainly would not want to be married to 'em. |
