Matt | can a sim only phone tariff (pay monthly) improve credit rating? |
Im wanting to get an orange pay monthly sim only plan , as they have no phones i want to take at the minute. I currently use an o2 pay monthly simplicity sim but the service i get from o2 is pretty crap and i was on orange before and it was great.
But i just turned 18 on thursday and got declined for an upgrade to a debit card (raging so i left them) from nationwide because of the credit check because i have no credit, so that makes me wonder about my credit rating, but they usually take anyone for sim only plans as they arent subsidising a phone or anything.
So i am going to apply for a new sim from orange if i pay my bills and all that after 3 months orange will let me upgrade to a full 18, 24 or 38 month contract. Will this improve my credit rating if i pay my bill on time and all that?

Also my current sim only plan from o2 is in my brothers name so its not going me any favours , so im going to get him to cancel it and ill get my new sim in my name. |

A phone plan isn't going to build credit at all. The only thing it will do is, if you do not pay your bill, they will send it to collections and that will get reported. You won't be rewarded for paying your cell phone bill. You have to actually get a credit card. Even a debit card will not build credit. |

i don't think it does i think its the pay monthly that does that or a land line bill why not apply for a capitol one card to build your credit |

That does not report to the credit bureaus.
There is a myth out there that getting a phone reports to the credit agencies.
That simply is not true.
Neither does renting furniture, or buying a timeshare.
Stop paying your bills - THEN... they report to the credit bureaus in a negative way.

IF your in the UK as I presume your are given the fact you stated O2 then:
WHEN you apply for any contract you ARE credit checked! So YES it can improve credit rating as long as you get the contract AND pay on time. EVEN BT Lanlines are credit checked and those with BAD credit history must put down a deposit of the first 3 months rental!!!!!!
NOT everyone can get a contract even a month to month one because it's based on credit.. I have O2 simplicity but my sister cannot even get that! My credit history is bad BUT I have lots of history (mostly good) built up where as she at 21 doesn't.
Yes you need to build up your credit rating (your bank may not give you a debit card yet as no history of earnings although you CAN get a basic bank account which is NOT based on credit and you can have a debit card with those! I have one!!!)
So the best is to try and make sure you have a regular income going into your bank, apply for a phone contract or as you have already done, apply for a capital one credit card.
(BE WARNED though with capital one, their interest is high so make sure you pay off your card every month. I got into debt with them LOL) |
