My Take on It

You are about to be ripped off.

Don't do business with companies that say they can consolidate your debt or eliminate bad credit.

I have used one of these offers from one of my credit card companies that allows me to pay off all my other credit cards and chose to pay a service fee of 3% and free interest for one year, or a service fee of 3% and 3% per annum interest over a two year period. I went for the two year deal. It was a good deal because the interest on my other credit cards was at 18% per annum.

Getting a loan to consolidate debt payments is like a person with brain cancer who refuses surgery and takes an aspirin. It might relieve the pain for a little while, but the root problem is still there and the longer you delay, the harder it will be to recover.

The reason you have debt is because you spent more money that you make. Getting a new loan won't change that. It only makes it easier to go deeper into debt. You need to address your income and spending and reverse the trend so that you earn more than you spend.

There are only 2 sides to the equation. Reduce spending by writing a budget, and only carrying CASH with you for the purchases you plan to make (within your budget). Increase income by taking an extra job, working overtime, and developing a longer term plan to advance in your career or get into a higher paying career.

Once you get to a point where you spend less than you make, you can work through the debts by paying extra, negotiating settlements, etc. Progress may seem slow at first, but as you start to knock out the smaller debts you'll gain leverage to attack the larger debts faster.

Google "debt consolidation cons".
There are many.
The new loan will reduce your credit worthiness.
The new loan will be over many more years - so you end up paying more interest over the years.
It could open up your old cards - and most people run them up again.

Stay away from any firm that says they’ll cut your debt in half. These firms have you deliberately default on your payments and trash your credit rating to settle for less. When you use such a firm, the monthly payment you make is going towards their settlement fees and to build a settlement account. Their fees are taken out first. Your credit cards will not be paid and will go into complete default during this process, which ruins your credit rating. This is deliberate so that they can attempt settlements for 50%.

These firms have warm-fuzzy “feel good” ads which give the impression that they are doing your credit card companies a favor and that they’ll gladly work with them. Many credit card card companies refuse to work with debt settlement firms. Your creditors are not obligated to take any settlement from anyone. You can never predict how your creditors will respond..they might settle at 50%...or they might serve you a summons, take you to court...and if they win, you could be looking at wage garnishment. If the process fails you can end up in a much worse financial situation where you’d have to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

If you're struggling with credit card debt and you've exhausted all self help options, then there are really only 2 options: Entering a debt management plan through a non profit credit counseling firm like CCCS. They can negotiate reduced payments and interest but NOT settlements. Referral at: http://www.nfcc.org - If this does not work out, the other option is Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
