Wesley M | 10 grand hospital bill....what now? |
So I had health insurance, but forgot to pay on time one month. They cancelled my policy, and I called them and asked to be reinstated. I eventually got re-instated, but the time in between I had a seizure and had to go to the E.R. Now I have a $10,000 bill. I'm 24, a blue collar worker, and I have a son. If it were not for my son, I would probably do something really stupid.
Any advice is welcome. |

First, I would confirm whether you were reinstated with a gap in coverage, or whether you were reinstated back to the date you were canceled. Its hard to tell based on the information you provided. However, if you were retroactively reinstated and truly show as having coverage on the date of your ER visit, then the hospital should be able to rebill the insurance company.
If there truly was a gap in coverage and you didn't have insurance on the date of the ER visit, then you need to talk with the hospital's patient financial services department. They likely have programs for uninsured individuals. For example, they may offer a percentage discount based on your household income. At a minimum, they should have a standard discount that they offer to any self-pay patient.
Its important that you speak with the hospital and don't just ignore the bill. You'll certainly get at least some discount from the billed charges by calling, and if you're low-income it could be a substantial discount. However, if you ignore the bills and don't find out whether you qualify for a discount program, the hospital will send you to collections for the full $10K. Don't lose out on the opportunity to get a discount on your balance, just because you're too afraid to call!
Good luck. |

Well it is clearn youdon't have that kind of money...call up the hospital and talk to them and explain your financial situation makes it impossible to pay this bill outright...ask them to accept monthly payments of what you can afford...$5, $10, $50, $100 ...whatever you know you can swing each month...they may even reduce the total bill. You may have to be persistant with them, but they will accomodate you so don't let their first answer sway you. Good Luck. |

You may be eligible for help from the hospital based on your income. Ask for an application. Also figure out a payment plan that works for you and get the agreement in writing. Whatever you do don't ignore the bill, that will make it worse and you could get your wages garnished. If you have state insurance they most likely will cover the bill if you went to the hospital within the 3 months before you got your insurance. I know it's a pain, but just keep calling people and talking to them until you get a good answer. If one person won't help you then speak to a manager or a different person. Just keep trying and you'll figure it out. You could also take out a loan to cover the bill. You could do this by going back to school or getting a co-signer. |

Go and see the hospital administrator. Sit down with them face to face and explain the situation. They will be happy to work with you. Tell them what you can afford to pay monthly etc and they will put you on a payment plan. |

You may be eligible for medicaid since you have a child. Medicaid can goback up to 3 months from the date of application. If you do not qualify for medicaid, contact the hospital and doctor to see if they offer any financial assistance. If you do not qualify for any of these, you will have to negotiate a cash discount and make payments.
Here is a link to medicaid in LA:

~~When the insurance company reinstated you did they roll the effective date back to when you first missed, or did they make it effective after that date. Make sure you actually weren't covered. If you truly were not, then tell the hospital what monthly payment you can afford, and send that payment in faithfully every month. As long as you don't miss, they can't turn you into collections.~~ |

As long as you pay them $5 a month, they can't do anything to you. However, if it's a non-profit hospital, they may have a financial aid program, and you may not have to pay anything. |

Call the hospital, ask them to reprice this to a cash price, which might be about 25% of that bill. Then set up payment arrangements with them. |
