Most Life Insurance policies contain a clause that in essence states that the death benefit will not be paid if death is due to an "Act of War."
After the 9/11 attacks, the insurance companies had to determine if they would pay the claim on insured individuals who died or invoke the War clause. Each company had to decide for themselves.
In my opinion, the Insurance Company would face a mountain of bad press if it chose to invoke that clause and not pay a claim.

Bull.
Although I would believe that most of the people didn't HAVE life insurance. About 70% of people do NOT have any type of life insurance in force at the time of death.
However, the workers comp payments that went out to the surviving spouses and children were in the millions. Between charity and insurance benefits, EACH DEAD AMERICAN averaged just under $2,000,000 paid to their families.

Did you know that you are perpetuating a false rumor?
The TRUTH: the insurance industry made a deliberate decision to pay benefit claims to the family of 9-11 victims who had in force life insurance policies. Not doing so would have been bad for business. It would have created "bad publicity" and shed public doubt on the insurance industry in the U.S.
In FACT, once the Federal special master made a determination of what a victim's family was entitled to from the "Victims Compensation Fund", a [deduction] was made which equaled what [private insurance had paid out].
