A question about gap insurance?
In 2006, I bought a brand new car and financed it for six years. I also decided to get gap insurance on it in case something happened that I was in an accident. Anyways, in 2007 I had to trade that car for another new car (the '06 had some problems that couldn't be fixed). Anyways... my husband just bought a new truck this year, and we were told that I should have gotten a refund on my gap insurance for the car I had bought in 2006. My question is:

1. Is this true?

2. Would this still apply after a year?

Thanks <3

1. If the cost of the gap insurance was added into the total purchase price and then financed? Yes

2. As long as you still have the paperwork from the purchase you should be able to get the money back. Be prepared to be told no several times and have to speak to a manager or write the finance company. You should eventually prevail, small claims court only costs about $50 to file.

if you bought it through the dealer then yes. if you still have the paperwork you can get the refund. the easiest way is to go back to the dealership, they can help you with the paperwork.

I'm not sure but i wanted to share my thought on the gap insurance anyway we had gap for the same reason incase anything ever happend and sure enough we were in a wreck in may and the gap insurance took forever to come trough and pay our car off in that case we wasn't able to collect any money for pain and suffering or anything theyrefundeded us money for my 8 month old twincar seatsts anthat'sts about it so its more trouble than its actually worth i will never do this again way tooo much hassle

1) Yes

2) Yes. Go back to the dealership where you purchased the 2006 or the lender that sold you the GAP insurance.

As long as you still have the paperwork from when you traded in the car, you should be fine. Specifically, you should have an odometer statement that showed how many miles the car had on it when you traded it in and the date the transaction took place.
You will get a pro-rated version of whatever you paid on the GAP insurance. It will probably be about half of the amount.

You shouldn't be given a hard time. I have done this multiple times and it was never an issue.

1. Maybe. It depends on how the "gap coverage" was set up, and if you bought it through the dealer or through your insurance company.

2. It's probably too late to ask for a refund. But it doesn't hurt to ask.
