CharlotteGrace | Accidental Death & life insurance policy ? |
I work for a non-profit organization and HR just recently enrolled me in a Accidental death & life insurance policy after almost two years of working there. HR stated that they simply forgot to give me the forms. All my co-workers have it. HR stated that the Accidental death will give my beneficiary 10,000 upon my death on the job, the membership is automatic and the 10,000 is supposed to be given to my beneficiary automatically. Is there a reason that my company waited so long in giving me this???
What are your thougts? |

HR are not life insurance agents or are they licensed to know anything about life insurance other than what the agent has sold it to them. The fact that they say your beneficiary will receive $10,000 in case you die is somewhat true. The real truth is that your beneficiary will only receive $10,000 if and only if you die from bodily injury and that no other medical factors has contributed to that death. That is what an accidental life insurance is. I don't know what kind of work you do, but the chance of you dying from bodily injury is very slim. It is best to read the life insurance policy to understand the product. |

You're being paranoid. Probably just administrative oversight. If you don't want it, delcine it. |

They either forgot or have some staff that doesn't do what they are suppose to do. Be glad that you have the coverage now. It's good to have it. Make sure you name a primary and a contingent beneficiary. |

Accidental Death and Dismemberment policies very rarely pay out (less than 3% of people with a policy will ever make a claim). Odds of dying accidentally are VERY low (realistically, what are the odds of dying on the job?). These policies are HUGELY profitable for companies becuase they rearely pay out.
You're better off putting that money into a regular life insurance policy if it's a concern to you, since they don't differenciate between accidental or other circumstances.
If you're employer is fully paying for the policy, just sign up for it, don't worry about why it wasn't offered earlier (it's not like you missed out on a claim) |

They maybe just forgot. Honestly, it's that big of a deal considering you didn't die. The other thing is, since it's a group life insurance policy it isn't portable so if you leave you don't get it. It's a term life insurance policy of 10,000. If you have a spouse and/or kids, 10,000 would be peanuts and wouldn't really help out with anything. I'd advise you to go talk to a local financial advisor and see what your concerns and needs are in case of death. Good Luck. |

I think the policy you mean is a life policy called "Accidental Death and Dismemberment" It's usually a cheap policy that good companies provide for their employees. Get it and don't question the delay. |
