Any insurance people out there who'd like to help me figure out what health insurance to get?
I guess I could ask someone at an insurance company, but I'm trying here first.

I'm in college so I can't afford to eat much less have health insurance. I don't even have a car. My health is pretty good. I'm less than average in the exercise area, but I'm enrolled in a fitness course next semester so that'll change. I pretty much need emergency insurance, and I'm also due for new glasses soon... oh and the dentist. I am one of those people who never gets sick. I can't afford the insurance, so I definately can't afford new glasses or an emergency trip to the hospital. I'd like some advice for the best company, maybe even plans, that would fit my life. Maybe I'll be able to afford it someday soon.

Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company.

If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. vision care, dental, doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles and low copays your monthly premiums will be significant.

On the other hand because you are young and reasonably healthy and apparently use the health care system infrequently you could consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe which will result in a relatively low monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead.

If you are not covered by your parents health insurance or your school does not offer a health plan you will need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. That adviser can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and copays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network.

Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance (perhaps your parents agent) he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health situation.

Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. Some might even "pitch" a discount plan that is not insurance at all. Use the Internet to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.

Check with the college - sometimes they offer a cheap plan to use at their healthcare facility.

Many times there are clinics that you pay based on your income. The local clinic would be able to give you information on getting a catastrophic plan. Also, your local car insuarance agents have a pretty good idea what individual policies are out there for someone in your situation.

If you are a full time student and a dependent of your parents, you may still be covered by their family coverage, assuming they have health insurance through their work. That would be the most economical.

If your parents don't have you on their plan, then consider the health insurance offered by the college. I went back to school about 9 years ago. My COBRA payment would have been over $500 per month. The college had health coverage I could buy for less than that for the entire semester (and Spring semester coverage was effective into August). The coverage through the school would probably offer major medical and emergency, but not dental or vision.

If you are at a 4-year school, there may also be a clinic you can use for basic health care and prescriptions. I'm not sure how they operate if you don't have either your own insurance or insurance through the school's plan.

For dental and vision, you probably need to talk to an insurance agent. Unless you anticipate major costs, you may be better off paying the bill than paying the insurance, especially after deductibles and copay.

Good luck!

look up a community healthcare center in your area. i live in nj and have charity care, i pay 20 for my doctor's visits. there are dental clinics in every state, look them up on the internet. dont go with a private insurance co.
