If you do, just get a policy with a Direct General Insurance! I would advise all consumers of the insurance industry to be very weary of this company, I have been advised by numerous persons in the insurance and motor vehicle field that they strive to screw people over. I had a vehicle insured with them when my wife was involved in an accident, all off a sudden my wife becomes listed as an excluded driver, and they refuse to pay on the claim. PLEASE, everybody, be weary when picking an insurance company, I wasn't, and now I have a $9300 paper weight in my driveway. |

Well, any time you go for CHEAP, you should prepare to be screwed - because CHEAP in insurance, means "not covered".
The best way to be "not covered" is to act as your own agent - ie, buy directly from the insurance company.
BTW, your wife can't "all of a sudden" be an excluded driver. Either you didn't list her as an "approved driver" on the application, or you specifically signed an operator exclusion form naming her "not covered". |

If you're living in the U.S., you should file a written complaint with your state insurance commissioner's office. It will investigate and determine whether this Company broke the law when it did this.

I agree with mbrcatz 17. Surely there are more details than this. Was your wife listed as a driver on the policy when the accident occured? She should have been listed or excluded. If she was listed, the claim should be paid. If she was excluded, there should be no coverage. If she wasn't listed you are in the wrong for not mentioning her to your agent. You did have an agent, didn't you? |

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's accident, I hope she's okay.
It's really difficult to "Get Screwed" by an Insurer. The entire industry is regulated by the DOI. Companies are subject to audits to ensure that they are operating by the letter of the law. If found to be in violation, they face fines, lawsuits or the loss of their business license. If your claim wasn't covered it's most likely because you missed something in the contract and paperwork you signed when you purchased your policy.
You may want to call the company for more details about how your wife became an excluded driver. If you are still having problems, contact the Department of Insurance in your state. |

No one wants to be screwed by anyone but then WE NEED to do our research. GEt second opinions.Shop around and ask whatever questions we need to to help us make wise desicions.There is a company that I am aware of Where their goal is to help and educate people with things like this. Primerica......it has helped many people close to me. But either way do your home work and research after all it is your hard earned money and you have THE RIGHT to research whatever you need to to make a desicion you are comfortable with.Sorry bout your car. |

Direct General is a sub standard company which sells very cheap insurance through independent agents, as mbrcatz stated there seems to be more to this, did you sign a named driver exclusion for your spouse or did you just not mention her to the agent? Even they would not risk a bad faith claim against them, they more than a standard company can't afford that. If you feel your wife was listed on the policy and not excluded then you should file a complaint against them with the entity that regulates insurance in your state, but if you excluded her or omitted her you'll have to make the best of that paper weight. By the way a quality company will not insure you if you want to exclude your spouse.Good Luck !!! |
