ihateaccounting | Anyone know a lot about insurance? |
My mom lost her job and now I have to get my own medical insurance. I know it pays for coverage to help cover medical, auto and other costs you cannot afford on your own, but once I get insurance does that mean I will have to pay what they cover back? For example, I get my teeth cleaned and it's $300. Insurance covers $250 and I pay, $50. Do I ever have to pay the $250 back to the insurance company? How does that work? Also, what is a co-pay? |

First of all, a medical insurance policy will not cover everything. Dental and vision insurance are separate and have to be paid for separately. Each policy is different, but there is some basic terminology: a deductible is the amount of money that you will have to pay out of pocket before the insurance begins to pay its share of costs. Deductibles start over each year. A copay is the amount of money that you owe for each visit or procedure. For certain things, like a visit to your primary care doctor, the copay may be a set amount (like $50). For other things, like surgery or labwork or x-rays, your copay will be a percentage of the total charges (like you pay 20%, the insurance pays 80%).
Medical insurance policies can be very complicated. I suggest you read the policy manuals thoroughly. If you don't understand it, which a lot of people don't, then call your local hospital and ask them if they have a patient representative, community educator, or other person who can help explain things to you. Most larger hospitals have a community education center that can answer questions. |

1. Medical insurance does not cover auto costs.
2. Having teeth cleaned does not cost $300. If your dentist charges that much, find a less expensive dentist. Insurance will not cover $250 for having your teeth cleaned, because the insurance company knows that it should not cost that much.
3. Under normal circumstances, you should never have to pay back the insurance company. However, if the insurance company pays something that was billed fraudulently (such as if you tell them that you had 17 caviities filled in order to get them to pay $250, when you really just had a cleaning), then you may be required to repay it.
4. The co-pay is the amount that the insurance does not cover. $50 in your (inaccurate) example.
5. Medical insurance does not pay anything for having your teeth cleaned. The only type of insurance that pays for having your teeth cleaned is dental insurance. |

No, you don't pay back the $250.
The copay, is the $50 you paid in your example. |
