Maria L | Are Well Baby Checkups Considered Maternity Care? |
I'm not working after I have the baby and am shopping for independent health insurance. Obviously I will ask before getting, but I know on this certain plan you have to wait six months before receiving maternity care coverage. But if I get the insurance, with a dependent, after the baby is born, will the well baby check ups be covered? Or would that be considered part of maternity care? |

Well baby checkups are not part of maternity care. They are part of routine child medical care.
However, you should be aware that no private insurance company will enroll a newborn on a new policy until they are at least 6-12 weeks old. They have to "pass" their first medical exams and show that they were born healthy.
So, you will have to pay for those first few well child exams out of your own pocket in order to prove that your baby is healthy enough to be put on a policy. (Unless you can get Medicaid to pay for it.) Also, if your child is born premature or with any medical complications, you won't be able to purchase a private insurance policy for him or her.
(I know that's not the question you asked, but I wanted to give you fair warning. Many new parents come on here shocked that they can't find an insurance company that will put their newborn on a policy. The only way that an insurance company "has" to take a newborn is if its through your employer or if you already had family coverage through that company.) |

No. Your six week postpartum checkup is maternity care. But any care the BABY receives, is NOT maternity care.
If you're pregnant now, regardless of all those websites that are currently harvesting your personal information to sell as leads to agents, you are NOT insurable on an individual health insurance plan. NO ONE WILL TAKE YOU WHILE YOU ARE PREGNANT. That's just how it is.
And dependent care for the first year, is really, really expensive, and you might have a hard time finding that coverage as well.
But no, well baby or healthy child checkups are not maternity care. |

Baby check ups are not a part of maternity care. But if you have yourself and the baby covered under private insurance the baby's check ups should be covered. |

It's not part of maternity at all. It's preventative care. |
