Are fat people driving up health insurance costs?

Oh please!

Health insurance costs were driven up by every idiot on the face of the earth suing doctors for not being Gods and figuring out every single thing that was wrong with them the first time they walked in the door, forcing doctors to now run every conceivable test they can think of if you walk in with a hang nail, just to make sure they don't get sued for malpractice. You never know. That hang nail might be cancerous.

Heath insurance costs were driven up because every time someone sneezes, they run to the doctor to make sure they didn't catch the bubonic plague.

Health costs were driven up because we now have the most amazing health care system in the world with CAT Scans, MRI's, and all kinds of other medical break-throughs that weren't even available 30 or 40 years ago and it's expensive as hell to buy one of those machines to they can scan your body and figure out what's wrong with you before you die.

Health costs were driven up because people continue to smoke, use drugs and generally treat their bodies like crap and then expect medical science to fix them.

No illegal immigrants and uninsured people that use the ER for their primary care physician are! Don't forget the cost of litigation from people that sue and win millions because the doctor cut a hangnail off in a less than perfect way.

no, litigation is

Yep. So are smokers, drug abusers, alcoholics, athletes, hypochondriacs, over-protective parents, premature babies, the elderly, guys popping erectile dysfunction pills, the sexually active, reckless drivers, the disabled, the accident-prone, the uninsured, the doctor-hoppers, the chronically ill, the terminally ill...

And that's not even to mention the drug companies (marketing directly to the population in general), doctors passing out pills like they're candy, and the lawsuit-happy folks who hire lawyers at the drop of a hat.

There's plenty of "blame" to go around, if finding someone to blame is your only objective. So, what's your point?

That could be a contributing factor. However, litigation costs and the 800% profits that drug companies make are also huge contributors of the higher costs. The good ole USA ends up paying all the research and development costs for new prescriptions, and other countries get to reap the benefits and only pay the cost of the actual drug. That is my experienced opinion.

There is some good info here and also a lot of misplaced anger.

America has the best health care system in the world. We have the finest of everything. People come here from all over the world for miracle surguries, many of them charity.

It is all of us that contribute to the rising costs in health care, in some way, even if it is living way too long because you were healthy and now you're not.

No.
SMOKERS are.

And so are the big fakers, who use disability for "back strain" or "pulled muscles", when the only thing wrong is that they want a free ride in life without having to work.

And SG Elite---you do NOT get a reduction in premiums for being "healthier".
(dumbass!)

mbrcatz
Yep, so are women (after all, who ELSE gives birth?), smokers, and everyone over 65.

Yes they are just like the smokers, the pregnant, the young children, the elderly, the A type and B type people, yes!

SG Elite
No. Fat people does not drive up health insurance costs but they would definiely help themselves reduce their insurance premiums if they were to stay healthy by eating moderately and exercise regularly.

That is pretty indisputable, yes they are. Obesity is taking over smoking as the leading cause of premature death.
