Are there Health Insurance Scams?
I tried to get some on the internet and a guy called me and almost to the end of the conversation he said his phone was about to die. Weird.

Absolutely, there are health insurance scams. When you try to get those online quotes, what's actually happening most of the time, is your personal information is being harvested, and sold to agents as leads. That's not the scam.

But sometimes, online quotes are for fake policies - you never get a policy, or the documents are forged. Or, you get sold a "plan" instead of "insurance" - and a plan doesn't PAY anything, it just offers (but doesn't guarantee) a discount on services.

To keep from getting scammed, buy your insurance from a local agent, with a real office.

Yeah, that definately sounds very sketchy to me. That's why I only deal with brokers, and I deal with them at least in person once. Not only does it support local business, but it's a lot safer when you actually meet the person and now it's know a scam.

Typically when you apply online though, your request is sent to a local agent for that company, so there is a chance that he called you from a cell phone. Still not the best way to do business in my opinion.

OK, just the fact that his phone was about to die doesn't necessarily mean that he was trying to scam you, but ... what do you mean, "tried to get some on the internet"? Did you go to a reputable, nationally known insurance company (like Blue Cross, or Harvard Pilgrim, or Aetna, or Kaiser) or did you go to some lame generic site like "www.We-have-medical-insurance-4U.com"? Because you don't really give us enough information to judge whether this person was attempting to scam you or not.

There are scams out there for every possible business. Good consumers know how to protect themselves on line and avoid them.

Some of these answers crack me up. FIRST of all, there are potential scams in ANYTHING. Buying insurance from an online site is not inherently risky. Most sites work one of two ways: Either the site IS an agent.... who is merely using the site to generate leads ( no different than the yellow pages in marketing terms) or the site is one owned by a company who generates leads to sell to agents (like those independent brokers some folks mentioned :)... Either way, it is certainly no less safe, or any more risky than any other method of purchasing insurance. Keep in mind that your main goal when purchasing insurance is to protect your family and your assets, and not to "support the local community". What a load of crap. Will the "local community" be there to pay your bills if you bought a substandard policy from an agent just because he had an office in your town? I think we ALL know that answer.

Having said that, when you purchase insurance (be it on the web or in person) there ARE certain things you MUST do:

1. Call your state's commissioner of insurance and check up on the company you are being quoted AS WELL AS the agent who is quoting you. See if either has complaints against them, etc. Keep in mind that if an insurance company has let' s say 50 complaints over the last 5 years but they write 20,000 policies a year in your state...then 50 represents a very small percentage, and should not automatically be a red flag.

2. NEVER NEVER NEVER make a check out to an insurance agent! ALWAYS make a check out directly to the insurance carrier.

3. Make sure you have a basic understanding of the type of insurance that you are looking for. Understand the concepts of deductibles, co-insurance, etc.

4. GET A SECOND OPINION. Any agent worth their salt will be happy to review the information you have collected.

Avoid the online shopping, there is just simply too much information, and too many scams to watch out for. Call a local agent. The policies available depend on where you live. An experienced agent can narrow down your options to one that best fits your needs, and that you can afford in just a few minutes.
